Multiple parton emission effects in next-to-leading-order direct photon production.

چکیده
A recent global analysis of direct photon production at hadron collider and fixed target experiments has noted a disturbing trend of disagreement between next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculations and data. The conjecture has been made that the discrepancy is due to explicit multiple parton emission effects which are not accounted for in the theoretical calculations. We investigate this problem by merging a NLO calculation of direct photon production with extra multiple parton emissions via the parton shower (PS) algorithm. Our calculation maintains the integrity of the underlying NLO calculation while avoiding ambiguities due to double counting of multiple parton emissions. We find that the NLO+PS calculation can account for much of the theory/CDF data discrepancy at √ s = 1.8 TeV. It can also account for much of the theory/UA2 discrepancy if a very large virtuality is assumed to initiate the initial state parton shower. For lower energy data sets (e.g. √ s < 63 GeV), NLO+PS calculations alone cannot account for the data/theory discrepancy, so that some additional non-perturbative kT smearing is needed. متن کاملEffects of Parton kT in High-pT Particle Production
We report on recent work concerning the phenomenology of initial-state partonkT effects in direct-photon production and related processes in hadron collisions. After a brief summary of a kT -smearing model, we present a study of recent results on fixed-target and collider direct-photon production, using complementary data on diphoton and pion production that provide empirical guidance on the re...
متن کاملInclusive Two–Jet Production in Photon–Photon Collisions: Direct and Resolved Contributions in Next–to–Leading Order QCD
We have calculated inclusive two–jet production in photon–photon collisions superimposing direct, single–resolved and double–resolved cross sections for center–of–mass energies of TRISTAN and LEP1.5. All three contributions are calculated up to next–to– leading order. The results are compared with recent experimental data. Three NLO sets of parton distributions of the photon are tested. متن کاملNNLO results for heavy quark and direct photon production near threshold
Heavy quark and direct photon production in hadronic collisions are processes of great interest. The discovery of the top has increased efforts in the calculation of heavy quark production cross sections while direct photon production is important for determinations of gluon distributions. Near threshold for the production of the final state in these processes one can resum logarithmic correcti...
متن کاملNuclear Effects in High Energy Photon and Neutral Pion Production
The nuclear enhancement of particle production, known as the Cronin effect, 1 received recent experimental attention by E706, 2 studying the high pT pion and direct photon production. In this talk we concentrate on direct photon and neutral pion production and propose a new physical mechanism responsible for the increase of the production rate in nuclear targets. Parton cross sections are calcu...
