Potential bioeffects of ultrasonic destruction of microbubble contrast agents.

چکیده
t is well known that microbubble destruction can occur uring contrast echocardiography, primarily by acoustic avitation (1). The propensity of microbubbles to undergo his process when exposed to ultrasound depends on physcal properties of both the bubbles themselves and the ltrasound beam. Higher rarefactional peak amplitude (a easure of ultrasonic acoustic power) and lower frequencies ause greater microbubble destruction (1–3). Thickness, ompressibility, and elasticity of the microbubble shell are mportant factors in their susceptibility to ultrasoundediated destruction (4). The ability to destroy microubbles has useful clinical applications, allowing the quanification of myocardial perfusion using replenishment urves (5). Also, we and others (6) have begun to investigate his attribute of microbubbles as a method for targeting ene or drug delivery.

Direct in vivo visualization of intravascular destruction of microbubbles by ultrasound and its local effects on tissue.
BACKGROUND Our aim was to observe ultrasound-induced intravascular microbubble destruction in vivo and to characterize any resultant bioeffects. METHODS AND RESULTS Intravital microscopy was used to visualize the spinotrapezius muscle in 15 rats during ultrasound delivery. Microbubble destruction during ultrasound exposure caused rupture of < or = 7-microm microvessels (mostly capillaries) an...
متن کاملRecommendations on the safe use of ultrasound contrast agents.
Clinical applications and safety concerns Clinical users should balance the expected clinical benefit from ultrasound contrast agents against the possibility of associated bioeffects. Caution should be exercised in the use of microbubble ultrasound in tissues where damage to microvasculature could be dangerous. Some areas of concern include the brain, the eye, the fetus and the neonate. Clinica...
متن کاملQuantification of Ultrasound Contrast Agents Using High Frequency Ultrasound
Ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) are small microbubbles filled with gas. Because of their scattering properties, UCAs enhance the diagnostic capabilities of ultrasonic imaging. UCAs are associated with therapeutic or enhancing therapeutic applications of ultrasound and with possible adverse bioeffects. Quantification of the in vivo concentration of microbubbles is therefore essential to establ...
متن کاملNew targeted angiogenic strategy: bursting bubbles.
Although recent procedural advances in revascularization such as percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary artery bypass grafting improve quality of life and prognosis of the patients with ischemic diseases, these is still a subset of patients who are refractory to these conventional therapies and have poor prognosis. Therapeutic angiogenesis might offer a novel approach to these patients...
متن کاملModeling and investigating the effect of ultrasound waves pressure on the microbubble oscillation dynamics in microvessels containing an incompressible fluid (Research Article)
Understanding the dynamics of microbubble oscillation in an elastic microvessel is important for the safe and effective applications of ultrasound contrast agents in imaging and therapy. Numerical simulations based on 2D finite element model are performed to investigate the effect of acoustic parameters such as pressure and frequency on the dynamic interaction of the fluid-blood-vessel system. ...
