Rational action without knowledge (and vice versa)

چکیده

It has been recently argued that knowledge is the norm of practical reasoning. A way of formulating this norm is the following bi-conditional: it is rational to treat p as a reason for acting if and only if you know that p. In my talk, I provide three new counterexamples to this claim. I show cases of rational action: i) motivated by imagining, ii) grounded in acceptance, and iii) performed in sceptical scenarios in which knowledge is absent. These three types of cases constitute objections to the left-to-right direction of the bi-conditional: it is shown that it is appropriate for a subject to act as if p even if she does not believe (and thus does not know) that p. Furthermore, I suggest that the first two are also counterexamples to the right-to-left direction of the bi-conditional: it is shown that one can know that p but that it is inappropriate for her to treat p as a reason for acting.

Acting in Service of Inference ( and vice versa )

We describe an integrated belief-desire-intention (BDI) architecture that is capable of acting in service of inference and vice versa. The results are achieved by identifying the relationship between inference and acting, and making certain architectural and ontological commitments. A single module called a rational engine operates on a uniform representation of beliefs, acts, plans, and reason...

Does Learning Magnitude Knowledge help Students Learn Procedural Knowledge or Vice Versa?

The present study was designed to explore how learning magnitude knowledge and learning procedural knowledge, with respect to both whole numbers and fractions, might be causally related. Neither magnitude knowledge nor procedural knowledge is necessary or sufficient for learning the other, and yet, correlations between the two are ubiquitous (e.g., Siegler & Pyke, 2013). Using correlational dat...

Construction of Global Function Fields from Linear Codes and vice Versa

We introduce a new connection between linear codes and global function fields, which in turn allows us to construct new global function fields with improved lower bounds on the number of rational places. The genus and number of rational places of subfields of certain families of cyclotomic function fields are given as well.

Detection of Coincidences and Generation ofHypotheses { a Proposal for an Elementary CorticalFunctionR

A framework for a model of elementary cortical function is presented which is based on the detection of coincident events by intracortical processing. By extracting coincidences knowlegde about the rules of interaction with the environment can be acquired. Vice versa this knowledge can be used for the generation of anticipatory hypotheses and hypotheses about ambiguous data. Some basic function...

I'd do anything for a cookie (but I won't do that): Children's understanding of the costs and rewards underlying rational action

Humans explain and predict other agents’ behavior using mental state concepts, such as beliefs and desires. Computational and developmental evidence suggest that such inferences are enabled by a principle of rational action: the expectation that agents act efficiently, within situational constraints, to achieve their goals. Here we propose that the expectation of rational action is instantiated...
