چکیده

Tree mortality is a key factor influencing forest functions and dynamics, but our understanding of the mechanisms leading to mortality and the associated changes in tree growth rates are still limited. We compiled a new pan-continental tree-ring width database from sites where both dead and living trees were sampled (2970 dead and 4224 living trees from 190 sites, including 36 species), and compared early and recent growth rates between trees that died and those that survived a given mortality event. We observed a decrease in radial growth before death in ca. 84% of the mortality events. The extent and duration of these reductions were highly variable (1-100 years in 96% of events) due to the complex interactions among study species and the source(s) of mortality. Strong and long-lasting declines were found for gymnosperms, shade- and drought-tolerant species, and trees that died from competition. Angiosperms and trees that died due to biotic attacks (especially bark-beetles) typically showed relatively small and short-term growth reductions. Our analysis did not highlight any universal trade-off between early growth and tree longevity within a species, although this result may also reflect high variability in sampling design among sites. The intersite and interspecific variability in growth patterns before mortality provides valuable information on the nature of the mortality process, which is consistent with our understanding of the physiological mechanisms leading to mortality. Abrupt changes in growth immediately before death can be associated with generalized hydraulic failure and/or bark-beetle attack, while long-term decrease in growth may be associated with a gradual decline in hydraulic performance coupled with depletion in carbon reserves. Our results imply that growth-based mortality algorithms may be a powerful tool for predicting gymnosperm mortality induced by chronic stress, but not necessarily so for angiosperms and in case of intense drought or bark-beetle outbreaks.

Radial variation in wood specific gravity of tropical tree species differing in growth-mortality strategies.

UNLABELLED • PREMISE OF THE STUDY Wood specific gravity (WSG) mediates an interspecific trade-off between growth and mortality and is a key measure for estimating carbon stocks. Most studies use species mean values to represent WSG, despite variation at different levels of biological organization. We examined sources of variation in WSG across four nested scales (segments within cores, cores ...

Coincidences of climate extremes and anomalous vegetation responses: comparing tree ring patterns to simulated productivity

Climate extremes can trigger exceptional responses in terrestrial ecosystems, for instance by altering growth or mortality rates. Such effects are often manifested in reductions in net primary productivity (NPP). Investigating a Europe-wide network of annual radial tree growth records confirms this pattern: we find that 28 % of tree ring width (TRW) indices are below two standard deviations in ...

Understanding tree growth responses after partial cuttings: A new approach

Forest ecosystem management heads towards the use of partial cuttings. However, the wide variation in growth response of residual trees remains unexplained, preventing a suitable prediction of forest productivity. The aim of the study was to assess individual growth and identify the driving factors involved in the responses of residual trees. Six study blocks in even-aged black spruce [Picea ma...

مقایسه اثر دما و تابش بر رشد قطری بلندمازو (Quercus castaneifolia C. A. Mey.) در محدوده جنگلی آستارا با استفاده از روش گاه‌شناسی درختی

Due to variances in response of different tree species in different habitats to climate changes, further studies in this field is clearly required. On the other hand, the lack of studies on chronology to evaluate the effect of solar radiation on radial growth of tree species due to lack of long term data of an important climatic variable, new approaches to determine the effect of this parameter...

A heat wave during leaf expansion severely reduces productivity and modifies seasonal growth patterns in a northern hardwood forest.

A useful approach to monitor tree response to climate change and environmental extremes is the recording of long-term time series of stem radial variations obtained with precision dendrometers. Here, we study the impact of environmental stress on seasonal growth dynamics and productivity of yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton) and sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) in the Great Lakes, ...
