چکیده

The oestrogenic activity of certain cultivars of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum, L.) first became known through the observation of serious infertility in ewes in the early 1940's in Western Australia (Bennetts, Underwood and Shier-1946). The manifestations in commercial flocks of the syndrome "clover disease" have been dealt with in the preceding paper (Lightfoot 1974). The deleterious effects of phyto-oestrogens have been a major economic problem in livestock husbandry in Australia and to a lesser extent elsewhere (reviewed: Moule, Braden and Lamond 1963; Bickoff 1968; Braden and McDonald 1970; Lightfoot 1974). The main species affected by phyto-oestrogens is the sheep. The effects of clover disease have been much alleviated by agronomic developments and managerial changes (Lightfoot 1974), although there are some inherent restrictions to these approaches at present.

Cellular and biochemical mechanisms by which environmental oestrogens influence reproductive function.

The biology and physiology of the male as well as female reproductive system is hormonally regulated. Abnormalities in the dynamics of hormone production, metabolism and elimination, as well as their binding to certain target tissues, has been associated with pathophysiological conditions of the reproductive system. Although oestrogens are known to be one of the major hormone groups in regulati...

Phyto-oestrogens through the life cycle.

The growing interest in the role of phyto-oestrogens in human health has prompted scientists to evaluate the risk : benefit which would result from consuming high levels of these compounds at different stages of the life cycle. These compounds have been shown to exert a wide range of hormonal and non-hormonal activities in animals and in vitro, and these activities suggest plausible mechanisms ...

Dietary phyto-oestrogens: molecular mechanisms, bioavailability and importance to menopausal health.

Following the high-profile studies on hormone replacement therapy which provided little evidence in support of the drug therapy improving future health, there remains a growing demand for dietary solutions for maintaining health and preventing disease as women age. Although interest in the relative importance of phyto-oestrogens to human health has increased dramatically over the last decade, t...

Environmental oestrogens, cosmetics and breast cancer.

The established role of oestrogen in the development and progression of breast cancer raises questions concerning a potential contribution from the many chemicals in the environment which can enter the human breast and which have oestrogenic activity. A range of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls possess oestrogen-mimicking properties and have been measured in human breast ...

Effects of phyto-oestrogens on tissues.

Recent investigations on the effects of phyto-oestrogens on various tissues have revealed that these diverse molecules may improve human health, particularly by protecting against certain chronic diseases. After a brief examination of the food sources, structures, and general cellular actions of the major phyto-oestrogens, current research findings on cardiovascular disease, skeletal tissues, a...
