Complexity in chemistry.

"Complexity" is a subject that is beginning to be important in chemistry. Historically, chemistry has emphasized the approximation of complex nonlinear processes by simpler linear ones. Complexity is becoming a profitable approach to a wide range of problems, especially the understanding of life.

Plug-based microfluidics with defined surface chemistry to miniaturize and control aggregation of amyloidogenic peptides.

Small with control: For miniaturization of protein aggregation experiments the interfacial chemistry must be controlled to avoid protein aggregation caused by interfacial adsorption. Plug-based microfluidics with defined surface chemistry (see schematic picture) can then be used to perform hundreds of aggregation experiments with volume-limited samples, such as cerebrospinal fluid from mice.

A microfluidic system for controlling reaction networks in time.

Communications Aqueous droplets of 250 pL formed in a microfluidic channel in a continuous flow of a water-immiscible fluid act as microreactors that mix the reagents rapidly and transport them with no dispersion. These droplets may also be used to control chemical reaction networks on millisecond time scale. For more information see the following publication by R. F. Ismagilov et al.

Real time chemical imaging of a working catalytic membrane reactor during oxidative coupling of methane.

We report the results from an operando XRD-CT study of a working catalytic membrane reactor for the oxidative coupling of methane. These results reveal the importance of the evolving solid state chemistry during catalytic reaction, particularly the chemical interaction between the catalyst and the oxygen transport membrane.
