چکیده

The Sr, C, and N isotopic signatures of organic matter in sediments from the continental shelf facing the Orinoco Delta were measured to determine the contribution of sediments transported from the Amazon River by the coastal Guayana current and the sediments transported by the Orinoco River. Box core samples between 60 and 300 m water depth collected along 4 transects located eastwards to the Orinoco Delta were analyzed. Carbon and nitrogen concentrations decreased with depth under water on the shelf, and were strongly correlated indicating homogeneity of organic matter composition. Phosphorus content was also associated to organic matter in most samples, but some of them revealed deposition of P-enriched sediments. The Sr/Sr ratios showed a strong continental signature averaging 0.7117, therefore, limiting the possible carbon and nitrogen sources associated with these sediments to C3 trees, C4 grasses, or freshwater phytoplankton. The dC values were relatively high averaging 21&, above values reported for sediments on the Amapá shelf and the Amazon River in Brazil. Average dC values did not differ significantly among transects. High dC values point to the influence of organic matter transported from the C4-plants dominated savannas in the northern fringe of the Orinoco River. dN values were positive and averaged 5&, being within the range of values measured in the Marajo island (Amazon River) and the estuary of the Pará River. The dN values differed significantly among transects (4.9– 5.2&), lowest values corresponding to the northernmost transect near the coast of Trinidad, and the highest values corresponding to the transect located at the southernmost position. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Organic Carbon and Organic Matter Levels in Sediments of the Strait of Hormoz, the Persian Gulf

Total organic carbon has a major influence on both the chemical and biological processesthat take place in sediments. Algal bloom is one of the organic carbon levels in aquatic ecosystems. In 2009 algal bloom occurred in the Hormozgan province and prolonged for months, which finally setteled down in 2010. In this study the variations of total organic carbon (TOC), organic matter (TOM) and tot...

Transport of organic carbon from the California coast to the slope region: A study of DC and DC signatures of organic compound classes

[1] Surface sediments along a transect from an abyssal site in the northeastern Pacific (Station M, 34 500N, 123 000W) to a small mountainous river on the California coast (Santa Clara River) were studied to investigate the sources and cycling of organic matter on the continental margin. Sediment samples were separated into organic compound fractions (extractable lipids, amino acids (THAA), car...

Sedimentary Organic Matter Preservation: a Test for Selective Degradation under Oxic Conditions

We report here a test of the hypothesis that the extent of organic matter preservation in continental margin sediments is controlled by the average period accumulating particles reside in oxic porewater immediately beneath the water/sediment interface. Oxygen penetration depths, organic element compositions, and mineral surface areas were determined for 16 sediment cores collected along an offs...

Terrestrial organic carbon contributions to sediments on the Washington margin

Elemental and stable carbon isotopic compositions and biomarker concentrations were determined in sediments from the Columbia River basin and the Washington margin in order to evaluate geochemical approaches for quantifying terrestrial organic matter in marine sediments. The biomarkers include: an homologous series of long-chain n-alkanes derived from the surface waxes of higher plants; phenoli...

Assessing Heavy Metals Pollution of the Mangrove Sediments along Tidal Flat of the Mehran River Delta, Persian Gulf

The relationship between the concentration of heavy metals and physicochemical factors was studied in the fine-grained sediments of the tidal section of the Mehran delta where mangrove trees have grown. Surface sediments of the tidal zone of the Mehran delta were sampled. The grain size distribution, calcium carbonate, organic matter contents, pH/Eh, and heavy metals concentration were determin...
