چکیده

We show that the gaseous halos of collapsed objects introduce a substantial cumulative opacity to ionizing radiation, even after the smoothly distributed hydrogen in the intergalactic medium has been fully reionized. This opacity causes a delay of ∆z & 1 in redshift between the time of the overlap of ionized bubbles in the intergalactic medium and the lifting of complete Gunn-Peterson Lyα absorption. The minihalos responsible for this screening effect are not resolved by existing numerical simulations of reionization.

The Impact of Small-scale Structure on Cosmological Ionization Fronts and Reionization

The propagation of cosmological ionization fronts during the reionization of the universe is strongly influenced by small-scale gas inhomogeneities due to structure formation. These inhomogeneities include both collapsed minihalos, which are generally self-shielding, and lower-density structures, which are not. The minihalos are dense and sufficiently optically-thick to trap intergalactic ioniz...

Photoevaporation of Cosmological Minihalos during Reionization

Energy released by a small fraction of the baryons in the universe, which condensed out while the IGM was cold, dark, and neutral, reheated and reionized it by redshift 6, exposing other baryons already condensed into dwarf-galaxy minihalos to the glare of ionizing radiation. We present the first gas dynamical simulations of the photoevaporation of cosmological minihalos overtaken by the ioniza...

Local Group Dwarf Galaxies and the Contribution of the First Stars to Reionization

The Local Group contains some dwarf galaxies that apparently formed all their stars early, lost their gas to winds or ionization, and survive today as “fossils” from the epoch of reionization. This study presents new models of these objects based on the hierarchical chemical evolution framework of Tumlinson (2006). The model accurately reproduces the observed luminosity-metallicity relation of ...

On the Detectability of the Cosmic Dark Ages: 21-cm Lines from Minihalos

In the standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) theory of structure formation, virialized minihalos (with Tvir ≤ 10,000K) form in abundance at high redshift (z >∼ 6), during the cosmic “dark ages.” The hydrogen in these minihalos, the first nonlinear baryonic structures to form in the universe, is mostly neutral and sufficiently hot and dense to emit strongly at the 21-cm line. We calculate the emission...

The Extended Starformation History of the First Generation of Stars, and the Reionization of Cosmic Hydrogen

Population-III (Pop-III) starformation (SF) is thought to be quenched when the metallicity of the starforming gas has reached a critical level. At high redshift, when the general intergalactic medium (IGM) was enriched with metals, the fraction of primordial gas already collapsed in minihalos (above the Jeans mass but below the mass corresponding to the efficient atomic cooling threshold for SF...
