Morphology and local electronic structure of metal particles on metal oxide surfaces: a scanning tunneling microscopic and scanning tunneling spectroscopic study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Metal particles (Au, Pd and Ni) with an average diameter between 7 to 100 ,~ have been prepared on thin metal oxide films (TiO 2, MgO and A1203), epitaxially grown on refractory metal substrates {Mo(100) or Re(0001)}, and imaged using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Information regarding the local electronic structure has been obtained using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Controlled manipulation of the metal particles with the STM tip is also demonstrated.

Effect of the strong metal-support interaction on hydrogen sorption kinetics of Pd-capped switchable mirrors
The morphology and electronic structure of Pd clusters grown on oxidized yttrium surfaces are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. The hydrogen sorption mediated by the Pd clusters is determined from the optically monitored switching kinetics of the underlying yttrium film. A strong thickness dependence of the hydrogen uptake is found. The el...
متن کاملResistive Switching Mechanisms on TaOx and SrRuO3 Thin-Film Surfaces Probed by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy.
The local electronic properties of tantalum oxide (TaOx, 2 ≤ x ≤ 2.5) and strontium ruthenate (SrRuO3) thin-film surfaces were studied under the influence of electric fields induced by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip. The switching between different redox states in both oxides is achieved without the need for physical electrical contact by controlling the magnitude and polarity of the...
متن کاملSurface point defects on bulk oxides: atomically-resolved scanning probe microscopy.
Metal oxides are abundant in nature and they are some of the most versatile materials for applications ranging from catalysis to novel electronics. The physical and chemical properties of metal oxides are dramatically influenced, and can be judiciously tailored, by defects. Small changes in stoichiometry introduce so-called intrinsic defects, e.g., atomic vacancies and/or interstitials. This re...
متن کاملCharacterization of metal clusters (Pd and Au) supported on various metal oxide surfaces (MgO and TiO2)
Au clusters supported on the TiO2~001!/Mo~100! surface and Pd clusters supported on the MgO~100!/Mo~100! surface have been studied using temperature programmed desorption, ion scattering spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Three dimensional growth has been observed at 300 K for both cases. The adsorption energy of Au on the TiO2~001! surface has bee...
متن کامل0 Adsorbed 3 d transition metal atoms and clusters on Au ( 111 ) : Signatures derived from one - electron calculations
The spectroscopic characteristics of systems with adsorbed d impurities on noble metal surfaces should depend on the number and geometric arrangement of the adsorbed atoms and also on their d band filling. Recent experiments using scanning tunneling microscopy have probed the electronic structure of all 3d transition metal impurities and also of Co dimers adsorbed on Au(111), providing a rich v...
