چکیده

We investigate the gravitational wave background produced by magnetars. The statistical properties of these highly magnetized stars were derived by population synthesis methods and assumed to be also representative of extragalactic objects. The adopted ellipticity was calculated from relativistic models using equations of state and assumptions concerning the distribution of currents in the neutron star interior. The maximum amplitude occurs around 1.2 kHz, corresponding to Ωgw ∼ 10 −9 for a type I superconducting neutron star model. The expected signal is a continuous background that could mask the cosmological contribution produced in the early stage of the Universe.

Cosmological Gravitational Wave Background from Phase Transitions in Neutron Stars

It has recently been suggested that collapse of neutron stars induced by a phase transition to quark matter can be a considerable source of gravitational waves with kHz frequencies. We demonstrate that if about one percent of all neutron stars undergo this process, the resulting cosmological gravitational wave background would reach about 10 times the critical density. The background would peak...

Gravitational Radiation from Newborn Magnetars in the Virgo Cluster

There is growing evidence that two classes of high-energy sources, the Soft Gamma Repeaters and the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars contain slowly spinning “magnetars”, i.e. neutron stars whose emission is powered by the release of energy from their extremely strong magnetic fields (> 1015 G). We show here that the enormous energy liberated in the 2004 December 27 giant flare from SGR 1806-20 (∼ 5×1046...

Gravitational wave background from sub-luminous GRBs: prospects for second- and third-generation detectors

We assess the detection prospects of a gravitational wave background associated with subluminous gamma-ray bursts (SL-GRBs). We assume that the central engines of a significant proportion of these bursts are provided by newly born magnetars and consider two plausible GW emission mechanisms. First, the deformation-induced triaxial GW emission from a newly born magnetar. Secondly, the onset of a ...

Magnetars in the Metagalaxy: An Origin for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays in the Nearby Universe

I show that the relativistic winds of newly born magnetars (neutron stars with petagauss surface magnetic fields) with initial spin rates close to the centrifugal breakup limit, occurring in all normal galaxies with massive star formation, can provide a source of ultrarelativistic light ions with an E injection spectrum, steepening to E at higher energies, with an upper cutoff at 10 − 10 eV. In...

Gravitational Waves from Neutron Stars: A Review

Neutron stars are excellent emitters of gravitational waves. Squeezing matter beyond nuclear densities invites exotic physical processes, many of which violently transfer large amounts of mass at relativistic velocities, disrupting spacetime and generating copious quantities of gravitational radiation. I review mechanisms for generating gravitational waves with neutron stars. This includes grav...
