چکیده

We measured dC values of free and sulfur-bound lipids and framboidal pyrite-size distributions in three sediment cores from the southern margins of the Black Sea. The margin cores show a marked di€erence in the occurrence of biomarkers from green sulfur bacteria compared with the deep-basin cores, as a result of deepening of the chemocline resulting from enhanced mixing and/or decreased light-penetration as a consequence of high turbidity and productivity in shelf waters. Quantitation of biomarkers suggests that photic-zone anoxia along the shelf margin was generally absent during the deposition of unit I, although occurred during the deposition of Unit IIb at two sites. # 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Black Sea Basin: Sediment Types and Distribution, Sedimentation Processes

The paper presents a part of the scientific activity of GEOECOMAR team during the IAEA project RER 2/003 Marine Environmental Assessment of the Black Sea Region, on board of R/V “Prof. Vodyanitskyi” and in laboratories. The Black Sea presents different sedimentological and geochemical characteristics in the eastern and western sub-basins. Whole sections of the Upper and Middle Holocene sediment...

Glacial-to-Holocene sedimentation on the western slope of Great Bahama Bank

Thick, late Quaternary sediment sections were recovered at several sites on the leeward slope of Great Bahama Bank during Leg 166 of the Ocean Drilling Program. These sections have paleoceanographic records with potentially high temporal resolution. To make an initial assessment of the records corresponding to the Holocene highstand of sea level, we have identified and dated the sediments from ...

Distribution and Composition of Thiotrophic Mats in the Hypoxic Zone of the Black Sea (150–170 m Water Depth, Crimea Margin)

At the Black Sea chemocline, oxygen- and sulfide-rich waters meet and form a niche for thiotrophic pelagic bacteria. Here we investigated an area of the Northwestern Black Sea off Crimea close to the shelf break, where the chemocline reaches the seafloor at around 150-170 m water depth, to assess whether thiotrophic bacteria are favored in this zone. Seafloor video transects were carried out wi...

Calcareous Nannofossils in Holocene Surface Sediments of the Persian Gulf

The effect of the paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental changes on the structure of the bioticcommunities are stronger and better recorded in the shelf area than in the open sea. The present study isdevoted to impact of climatic events on some species of calcareous nannofossils. For this reason, 17samples of surface sediments of the Persian Gulf were studied. Preservation of calcareous nannofoss...

Late Holocene Caspian Sea Level Changes and its Impacts on Low Lying Coastal Evolution: a Multidisciplinary Case Study from South Southeastern Flank of the Caspian Sea

Caspian Sea is the largest land locked water body in the world and has been characterized by significant relative sea-level changes since the Pliocene. The sea-level oscillations have strongly impacted the coastal areas depending on geomorphological setting. This study aims to investigate the impacts of sea level oscillations on low-lying coasts of the southeastern flank of the Caspian Sea...
