چکیده

Knowledge of the potential dangers of exposure to radioactive substances and the insti tution of proper safety precautions have helped to reduce accidental exposures to radioactive substances. However, the carcinogenic hazard from them has by no means been eliminated, and, in spite of the exercise of reasonable care and the use of improved technics, accidents in the laboratory and indust ry may still occur. Because of the vast ly increased scientific usage and the projected expansion of atomic power in industry, the potential hazard will increase in the future. In the following we shall review briefly carcinogenesis in man by natural ly occurring and artificially produced radioactive substances, the lung cancer problem in miners, the development of bone tumors in luminous dial painters and in pat ients t reated with radium-containing nostrums, and the development of cancers in pat ients who received thorot ras t (ThO~) as a diagnostic procedure several decades ago. We shall also review some of the experimental work which indicates the extensiveness, the limitations, the problems, and the prospects associated with the use of radioisotopes as carcinogenic agents. Finally, brief consideration will be given to the external use of radioisotopes and to the "fall ou t" problem.

Filtration Removal of Americium, Cobalt & Cesium in Ob River Water Under Conditions of Increasing Salinity

In this paper, Michael Boyer attempted to determine the magnitude of an emerging environmental threat: the flow of radioactive materials from industrial sites in the former Soviet Union to rivers and other bodies of water, which in turn empty into the Arctic Ocean. While such radioactive pollution is harmful regardless of its destination, the Arctic’s precarious ecology is particularly vulnerab...
