چکیده

\A\e southern oyster drills, Stranionita haemastoma floridana (Conrad, 1837), have been collected from two Chesapeake Bay western shore tributaries. Four specimens were collected between Brown Shoal and Thomas Rock in the lower James River in February 2005. Thirteen live southern oyster drills were collected from Back Biver in April 2006. Identification of these drills as Stramonita haemastoma floridana has been confirmed using DNA bar-coding data. Southern oyster drills collected in Chesapeake Bay are genetically nearly identical to populations from the Atlantic coast, and differ significantly from populations from the Azores and from the Gulf of Mexico. These collections mark the first reported records of live southern oyster drills from within the Chesapeake Bay estuar)'. It is unknown if these drills represent isolated introductions or expansions of the northern range this species. Water temperature patterns in Chesapeake Bay and the Mid-Atlantic Bight from 1990-2005 are similar to those obser\'ed in the late 1950s when Stramonita haemastoma floridana was first found living in Chincoteague Bay, Maryland. Millennial-scale sustainability of the Chesapeake Bay Native American oyster fishery.

Estuaries around the world are in a state of decline following decades or more of overfishing, pollution, and climate change. Oysters (Ostreidae), ecosystem engineers in many estuaries, influence water quality, construct habitat, and provide food for humans and wildlife. In North America's Chesapeake Bay, once-thriving eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) populations have declined dramaticall...

Combined effects of temperature-salinity on larval survival of the Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica in the Maryland portion f the Chesapeake Bay (USA)

AB5TRACT Oyster landings in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay have declined by more than 50 fold since the early part of the century, despite intensive management efforts. The am\ual shell repletion program is the most critical programmatic element to effect recovery of the ailing Eastern oyster Crassotrea Tlirginica stock and fishery. The overall efficacy of shell repletion managemen...

Habitat Affects Survival of Translocated Bay Scallops, Argopecten irradians concentricus (Say 1822), in Lower Chesapeake Bay

Bay scallop (Argopecten irradians) populations existed in Chesapeake Bay until 1933, when they declined dramatically due to a loss of seagrass habitat. Since then, there have been no documented populations within the Bay. However, some anecdotal observations of live bay scallops within the lower Bay suggest that restoration of the bay scallop is feasible. We therefore tested whether translocate...
