Changing Diet Breadth in the Early Upper Palaeolithic of Southwestern France

چکیده
Archaeological applications of foraging theory models require that variables derived from ecological considerations be translated into archaeological terms. Here, we explore some of the potential difficulties that may exist in the archaeological measurement of diet breadth, a key variable in many foraging theory approaches. We then examine seven ungulate assemblages from the early Upper Palaeolithic site of Le Flageolet I (Dordogne, France) in this light, and show that these assemblages incorporate distinctly different relationships between numbers of specimens and numbers of taxa. While some of the differences involved may be caused by differential specimen fragmentation, the entire pattern of similarities and differences in richness appears to reflect changing maximum diet breadths through time. ? 1998 Academic Press

Specialized Early Upper Palaeolithic Hunters in Southwestern France?
Paul Mellars has long used cave and rockshelter ungulate faunal assemblages from southwestern France to argue that the early Upper Palaeolithic people of this region focused their hunting on reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), and that such specialized hunting distinguishes the Upper from the Middle Palaeolithic in at least this region. We examine this argument quantitatively, using a sample of 133 M...

In the south west of France the majority of research concerning the Middle-to-Upper Palaeolithic transition tends to focus upon the Chatelperronian and Aurignacian at the expense of the end of the Middle Palaeolithic. This contribution attempts to rectify this shortcoming by demonstrating that the classic model of a direct MTA-Chatelperronian filiation is no longer valid as these two techno-com...
متن کاملLand Snails as a Diet Diversification Proxy during the Early Upper Palaeolithic in Europe
Despite the ubiquity of terrestrial gastropods in the Late Pleistocene and Holocene archaeological record, it is still unknown when and how this type of invertebrate resource was incorporated into human diets. In this paper, we report the oldest evidence of land snail exploitation as a food resource in Europe dated to 31.3-26.9 ka yr cal BP from the recently discovered site of Cova de la Barria...
متن کاملExplaining the Development of Dietary Dominance by a Single Ungulate Taxon at Grotte XVI, Dordogne, France
The Magdalenian of southwestern France has long been renowned for the frequency with which associated faunal assemblages are dominated by reindeer (Rangifer tarandus). The site of Grotte XVI (Dordogne, southwestern France) is no exception: 94% of the Magdalenian ungulate assemblage at this site is provided by reindeer. However, this figure represents the endpoint in a steadily increasing progre...
متن کاملNeandertal foraging during the late Mousterian in the Pyrenees: new insights based on faunal remains from Gatzarria Cave
This article presents the initial results of a new study of faunal remains from Gatzarria Cave, a Middle-toUpper Palaeolithic transition site the Pyrenees of southwestern France (department of the Pyrénées Atlantiques). This study attempts to document diet breadth during the late Mousterian, while paying due attention to recently identified problems regarding the stratigraphic context of the as...
