چکیده

T National Institutes of Health roadmap for medical research places great emphasis on translational medicine. Nonetheless, it remains a difficult proposition for PhD scientists trained to study intracellular and molecular mechanisms to appreciate the bigger picture of how their work relates to human systems biology. This difficulty is compounded by the disparate educational curricula that separate graduate students from medical students, with graduate students rarely experiencing the clinical environment. In effort to expose our PhD graduate students to integrated aspects of human physiology and contextualize drug utilization, we report the use of human patient simulation in our pharmacology curriculum.

Translational Antidote Research: A Bedside to Bench Tale

Although antidote development should proceed in an orderly fashion from observation, to experimental and safety studies, to clinical trials, this sequence is not always precisely followed. The development of fomepizole as an antidote for toxic alcohol and glycol poisoning is an example of how this may not be the case. Interest in the development of fomepizole was spurred in the 1960s. Shortly t...

Promising role for Gc-MAF in cancer immunotherapy: from bench to bedside

Immunotherapy has been used for years in many types of cancer therapy. Recently, cancer immunotherapy has focused on mechanisms which can enhance the development of cell-mediated immunity. Anticancer medications are administered to inhibit immunosuppressive factors such as nagalase enzyme, which is produced by neoplastic cells and destroys macrophage activating factor (Gc-MAF). Anti-neoplastics...

The cultural divide: exploring communication barriers between scientists and clinicians

Despite remarkable advances in basic biomedical science that have led to improved patient care, there is a wide and persistent gap in the abilities of researchers and clinicians to understand and appreciate each other. In this Editorial, the authors, a scientist and a clinician, discuss the rift between practitioners of laboratory research and clinical medicine. Using their first-hand experienc...

Modulation of the natriuretic peptide system in heart failure: from bench to bedside?

Since the discovery of atrial natriuretic peptide, the unravelling of the natriuretic peptide system has been a story of scientific success. However, bridging the gap between bench and bedside has proved difficult, and as yet has not provided any major clinical progress. In this review we will first give a detailed outline of the key elements constituting the natriuretic peptide system. Secondl...

Bedside Teaching in Undergraduate Medical Education: Issues, Strategies, and New Models for Better Preparation of New Generation Doctors

Bedside teaching is a vital component of medical education. It is applicable to any situation where teaching is imparted in the presence of patients. In teaching in the patients’ presence, learners have the opportunities to use all of their senses and learn the humanistic aspect of medicine such as role modeling, which is vital but difficult to communicate in words. Unfortunately, bedside teach...
