Petrogenetic significance of some new xenolithic alkaline rocks from East Africa

چکیده
New occurrences of xenolithic alkaline rocks from three East African volcanoes are described. Micro-ijolites and alkali pyroxenites occur in the carbonate-rich tufts and lavas of Mount Elgon; kaersutite-rich pyroxenites and a suite of fenitized basement rocks in the caldera flows of Mount Meru, and apparently unique melanocratic hortonolite nepheline syenites in the central foyaite plug of Mount Kenya. The sTSr/a6Sr ratios indicate mantle origin, and all are enriched in trace elements such as St, Nb, and Zr. The xenoliths from Mount Kenya are cumulate equivalents of the glassy kenyte lavas of the mountain; the pyroxenites of Mount Elgon are also cumulates whose predominant titanaugite is of identical composition to that of the host lavas. The contrast between the 'dry' Elgon pyroxenites and the 'wet' amphibole-rich types from Mount Meru is believed to reflect different CO,~/HeO ratios in the volatile phase accompanying the alkaline vulcanicity. Strongly alkaline, carbonate-rich suites such as that of Mount Elgon derive from fairly dry alkali-basaltic magma under high CO~ activity by dominant pyroxene fractionation, whereas the mildly alkaline lineage seen in some areas of Mount Meru forms under more hydrous conditions in which amphibole fractionation is important. Mount Meru in addition shows a transition to rock-types typical of the strongly alkaline lineage, and this is reflected in the occurrence of relatively amphibole-poor pyroxenites with the amphibole-rich types.

Petrogenetic Evolution of Plio-Quaternary Mafic Lavas in Nehbandan (East Iran)
Both the Sistan Suture Zone of eastern Iran and the Nehbandan Fault contain Plio-Quaternary Nehbandan mafic lavas. Positive anomalies in the large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and negative anomalies in Nb (niobium) exist in these mafic lavas. This indicates the occurrence of subduction magmatism and post-collision volcanism. Petrologic and geochemical analyses distinguished two groups of lava...
متن کاملQuaternary volcanism in Tabas and the role of the Nayband great fault
Introduction: Quaternary basalts are one of the last signs of magmatism in Iran, some of which are related to deep fractures and active faults in the Quaternary. Quaternary basalts of Tabas are very important due to their high expansion and location in eastern Iran, and are located 140 km south east of Tabas city and according to the proposed divisions are part of the Lut zone. The aim of this...
متن کاملPetrology and Geochemistry of Early Cambrian Volcanic Rocks Hosting the Kiruna-type Iron Ore in Anomaly 10 of Sechahun, Central Iran
Early Cambrian volcanic rocks of the Posht-e Badam tectonic block in Central Iran which is hydrothermally altered to green color rocks, hosts the Kiruna-type Iron Oxide-Apatite (IOA) mineralization in Anomaly 10 of Sechahun deposit. Geochemically, these volcanic rocks are classified as high-potassium calc-alkaline and mainly consist of rhyolite and trachyandesite. These rocks are important for ...
متن کاملAGeochemical Classification for Feldspathic Igneous Rocks
In this paper we classify the range of feldspathic igneous rocks using five geochemical variables: the FeO/(FeOþMgO) ratio or Fe-index, the modified alkali^lime index, the aluminum-saturation index, the alkalinity index, and the feldspathoid silica-saturation index. The Fe-index distinguishes between melts that have undergone extensive iron enrichment during differentiation from those that have ...
متن کاملPetrologic Comparisons of Lunar Mare Basalt Meteorites Dh-287A and NWA
Introduction: It is intriguing that the majority of lunar meteorites (~30) have been discovered in the hot deserts of Middle-East and North Africa. In contrast, of 10s of thousands of meteorite finds from Antarctica over 30 years, only a handful (~5) are lunar. This bias towards the lunar meteorite recovery from the hot deserts may be due to the preferential fall of lunar meteorites in these re...
