چکیده

A counterion-only double-layer theory is developed taking a constrained entropy maximization approach based on an isothermal thermodynamic system. The double-layer interaction free energy per unit area between two charged planar surfaces is obtained in a consistent manner for the boundary conditions of constant surface charge density and charge regulation. Once applied to the nonpolar medium, it reveals that the electrical double-layer repulsion is weak and long-ranged. Asymptotically, the interaction decays as a power law, in contrast with that in the presence of an ion reservoir which decays exponentially at large surface separation. The applicability of the counterion-only model for describing colloidal stability in nonpolar media is discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1500359#

Thickness of electrical double layer. Effect of ion size

The thickness of a single flat electrical double layer is considered. The electrostatic mean field and the excluded volume effect are taken into account. A simple statistical mechanical approach is used, where the particles in the solution are distributed over a lattice with an adjustable lattice constant. Different sizes of ions are described by different values of the lattice constant. Two me...

Excluded volume driven counterion condensation inside nanotubes in a concave electrical double layer model.

The physical properties of organic nanotubes attract increasing attention due to their potential benefit in technology, biology and medicine. We study the effect of ion size on the electrical properties of cylindrical nanotubes filled with electrolyte solution within a modified Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) approach. For comparison purposes, small hollow nanospheres filled with electrolyte solution ar...

Design and Simulation of a Highly Efficient InGaN/Si Double-Junction Solar Cell

A solar cell is an electronic device which not only harvests photovoltaic effect but also transforms light energy into electricity. In photovoltaic phenomenon, a P-N junction is created to form an empty region.  The presented paper aims at proposing a new highly efficient InGaN/Si double-junction solar cell structure. This cell is designed to be used in a real environmental situation, so only s...

Counterion correlations and attraction between like-charged macromolecules.

A simple model is presented for the appearance of attraction between two like-charged polyions inside a polyelectrolyte solution. The polyions are modeled as rigid cylinders in a continuum dielectric solvent. The strong electrostatic interaction between the polyions and the counterions results in counterion condensation. If the two polyions are sufficiently close to each other their layers of c...
