We study the relation between center vortices and instantons in lattice QCD. One approach to understanding the physical origin of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking is to attempt to capture the essential physics in a much smaller number of degrees of freedom by projecting from a maximal abelian or maximal center gauge. We measure correlations appropriate for favour-singlet mesons using dynamical quark configurations from UKQCD. Improved methods of evaluating the disconnected quark diagrams are presented. The scalar and pseu-doscalar meson channels are explored, with special reference to the mixing of scalar mesons with scalar glueballs.

We calculate the large-volume and small-mass dependences of the quark condensate in quenched QCD using Neuberger's operator. We find good agreement with the predictions of quenched chiral perturbation theory, enabling a determination of the chiral lagrangian parameter Σ, up to a multiplicative renormalization.

We present an exact local bosonic algorithm for the simulation of dynamical fermions in lattice QCD. We show that this algorithm is a viable alternative to the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm.
