Portfolio Choices and Cross Effects Designs

چکیده
This paper argues that certain choice problems in transportation research can be best conceptualized as problems of portfolio choice. It discusses how portfolio choice problems can be studied using stated choice (conjoint) methods. Issues in the construction in the design of experiments, model specification and estimation are discussed. A working example illustrates the basic approach. Finally, possible extensions of the basic approach are identified.

The Effect of Taxes on Portfolio Choice: Evidence from Panel Data Spanning the Tax Reform
This paper estimates the effect of marginal tax rates on demands for various financial assets, using the 1983-1989 Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) panel. In the crosssection, marginal tax rates appear to have a strong and statistically significant influence on portfolio allocations, even after controlling for income and wealth. For example, people with high tax rates tend to hold larger share...

Many tests of asset-pricing models address only the pricing predictions, but these pricing predictions rest on portfolio choice predictions that seem obviously wrong. This paper suggests a new approach to asset pricing and portfolio choices based on unobserved heterogeneity. This approach yields the standard pricing conclusions of classical models but is consistent with very different portfolio...
متن کاملHow Do Household Portfolio Shares Vary With Age?
Using pooled cross-sectional data from the Surveys of Consumer Finances, and new panel data from TIAA-CREF, we examine the empirical relationship between age and portfolio choice, focusing on the observed relationship between age and the fraction of wealth held in the stock market. We illustrate and discuss the importance of the well-known identification problem that prevents unrestricted estim...
متن کاملPrices and Portfolio Choices in Financial Markets: Theory and Experiment∗
Most tests of asset pricing models address only the pricing predictions – perhaps because the portfolio choice predictions are obviously wrong. But how can asset-pricing theory be right if the portfolio choice theory on which it rests is wrong? This work builds and observes experimental markets in which risky and riskless assets are traded. Risk aversion is a robust phenomenon in experimental s...
