چکیده
Feulgen and Rossenbeck (1) demonstrated in 1924 in the cytoplasm of cells the presence of substances which give histochemically a color reaction with Schiff’s aldehyde reagent. Feulgen and Voit (2) at the same time showed that the aldehyde group of these substances is not free, but bound in a labile form. The authors called this substance plasmalogen. Feulgen and Bersin (3) succeeded in 1939 in isolating this compound from beef muscle and identified it as an acetal of glycerylphosphorylcolamine. Feulgen’s method of isolation of this acetal phospholipide from muscle cannot be applied to tissues which contain a large amount of different lipides. Attempts to isolate an intact and pure acetal phospholipide from the lipide mixture of brain have been so far unsuccessful (4). In this paper a procedure is described, by which the isolation of a crystalline acetal phospholipide from brain can be achieved, and its physical and chemical properties are reported. The behavior of acetal phospholipide toward enzymes and the physiological significance of the fatty aldehydes are under investigation.

Studies of Acetal Phospholipides of Brain
Feulgen and Bersin (1) obtained from the hydrolysis products of the acet>al phospholipide present in muscle a mixture of thiosemicarbazones. They suggested that these thiosemicarbazones are derivatives of pahnitic and stearic aldehydes, although t,hey gave no analytical data supporting this view. Anchel and Waelsch (2) obtained from hydrolysates of lipide mixtures from different tissues, includ...
متن کاملIdentification of phosphatidal choline as the major constituent of beef heart lecithin.
In the course of a study of the analytical determination of ester groupings in naturally occurring phospholipides, we found that a specimen of beef heart lecithin, prepared according to the method of Pangborn (l), regularly gave ester values considerably below those obtained with egg lecithin. The preparation was presumably pure, since it was colorless, free of amino nitrogen, had a molar N:P r...
متن کاملThe Structure of Plasmalogens
In the previous paper (1) we described a sequence of events which led from the isolation of crystalline “acetal phospholipide” by Feulgen and Bersin, and the realization by Schmidt and coworkers that the properties of this compound differed from those of native plasmalogen, to the preparation of plasmalogen fractions in this laboratory which indicated the presence of a fatty acid ester residue ...

Modified galactosylceramide with a long-chain cyclic acetal at the sugar moiety, plasmalogalactosylceramide, was isolated from equine brain. To identify the isomeric stereostructure of the natural product, the plasmalo derivative was chemically synthesized from galactosylceramide through acetalization. The presence of cyclic acetal linkage, the linked position and length of the acetal chain of ...

Due to numerous reasons, marine-obtained resources have attracted the interest of researchers. One of the subjects attracted the interest of researchers in recent years in the field of biologist marine algae due to their nutritional value, their benefits for health and their biological activities. In this study, the powder was extracted using acetone, then the extract purified by silica gel col...
