Heterogeneous Technology Di¤usion and Ricardian Trade Patterns
نویسنده
چکیده
This study tests the importance of Ricardian technology di¤erences for international trade. Panel regressions nd technology growth increases manufacturing exports. To establish a causal relationship between technology and trade, instrumental-variables speci cations exploit uneven technology di¤usion from the US through ethnic scienti c networks. The instrumented elasticity of export growth to the exporters technology development is 0.9 in the preferred speci cation. Supplemental speci cations show this elasticity is robust to incorporating the importers technology development and to controlling for the Rybczynski e¤ect due to factor accumulation. An exogenous reform of US immigration law also con rms the results are not due to reverse causality. These ndings suggest technology di¤erences are an important determinant of trade patterns. JEL Classi cation: F11, F14, F15, F22, J44, J61, L14, O31, O33, O57.

Heterogeneous Technology Diffusion and Ricardian Trade Patterns
This study tests the importance of Ricardian technology differences for international trade. The empirical analysis has three comparative advantages: including emerging and advanced economies, isolating panel variation regarding the link between productivity and exports, and exploiting heterogeneous technology diffusion from immigrant communities in the United States for identification. The lat...
متن کاملInnovation, Di usion, and Trade
We explore the determinants of research specialization and examine the e ects of technology di usion and trade on the incentives for innovation. To some extent, di usion substitutes for trade. If trade costs are low relative to di erences in comparative advantage in doing research, rapid di usion implies specialization in research activity. Country size has an ambiguous e ect on specialization ...
متن کاملBorrowing Constraints and Technology Di¤usion: Implications of Intra-Industry Trade (Job Market Paper)
This paper develops a theory of total factor productivity di¤erences in a framework of technology di¤usion. I show how in countries with tighter borrowing constraints, frontier technologies di¤use more slowly, and old outdated technologies continue to be used. I analyse how countries with di¤erent borrowing constraints specialise across new and old technologies through two forms of intra-indust...
متن کاملWGI Discussion Papers
The paper presents a formal analysis which incorporates returns to transportation into a Ricardian framework to predict trade patterns. The important point to be gained from this analysis is that increasing returns to transportation, coupled with appropriate distances between trading partners can be shown to reverse Ricardian predictions even when there are no international differences in taste...
متن کاملPutting Ricardo to Work
Presented with the opportunity to trade, countries bene t by specializing in the activities they do relatively better. This nding, the principle of comparative advantage, is one of the rst analytic results in economics. While Adam Smith (1776) made a much earlier case for free trade, he based it on increasing returns to scale, and provided no formal demonstration. In contrast, David Ricardo (...
