Respondent Driven Sampling

چکیده
Respondent driven sampling (RDS) is a network sampling technique typically employed for hard-to-reach populations (e.g. drug users, men who have sex with men, people with HIV). Similar to snowball sampling, initial seed respondents recruit additional respondents from their network of friends. The recruiting process repeats iteratively, thereby forming long referral chains. Unlike in snowball sampling, it is crucial to obtain estimates of respondents’ personal network size (i.e., number of acquaintances in the target population) and information about who recruited whom. Markov chain theory makes it possible to derive population estimates and sampling weights. We introduce a new Stata program for RDS and illustrate its use. JEL classification: C83, C88

A response to the use of respondent-driven sampling in urban Indigenous populations.
Critical review and evaluation of the article “Mental health and substance use in an urban First Nations population in Hamilton, Ontario” by Firestone et al. brought an important issue to the forefront, namely the use of respondent-driven sampling for participant recruitment. The use of respondent-driven sampling during the study’s recruitment period raises questions about the presence of any u...
متن کاملSample Size Calculations for Population Size Estimation Studies Using Multiplier Methods With Respondent-Driven Sampling Surveys
BACKGROUND While guidance exists for obtaining population size estimates using multiplier methods with respondent-driven sampling surveys, we lack specific guidance for making sample size decisions. OBJECTIVE To guide the design of multiplier method population size estimation studies using respondent-driven sampling surveys to reduce the random error around the estimate obtained. METHODS Th...

Sampling hidden populations is challenging due to the lack of convenience statistical frames. Since most populations exposed to special diseases are hidden and hard to reach, sampling methods that produce representative and efficient samples from the populations have become a study subject for researches all over the world. Because of the unknown probability of selecting samples in conventional...
متن کاملComparison of sampling methods for hard-to-reach francophone populations: yield and adequacy of advertisement and respondent-driven sampling
BACKGROUND Francophones who live outside the primarily French-speaking province of Quebec, Canada, risk being excluded from research by lack of a sampling frame. We examined the adequacy of random sampling, advertising, and respondent-driven sampling for recruitment of francophones for survey research. METHODS We recruited francophones residing in the city of Calgary, Alberta, through adverti...
متن کاملModelling the Effect of Differential Recruitment on the Bias of Estimators for Respondent-Driven Sampling
Respondent Driven Sampling has previously been modelled as a random walk on a network. In this document we show that this model can be used to encompass within-group differential recruitment, and examine the implications for bias of several common estimators.
متن کاملApproximate Bayesian Computation Estimator for Respondent-Driven Sampling
Respondent-driven sampling is a network-based technique to collect information and make estimation about behavior and composition of social groups in hidden population. The non-randomly selected samples prohibit the use of the sample mean as a statistically valid estimator. Researchers have proposed several asymptotically unbiased estimators, but many fail to realize that the high variance of t...
