A Note on the Barotropic Response of Sea Level to Time - dependent Wind Fon

چکیده

This study examines the extent to which sea level variations at periods less than a year and spatial scales greater than 1000 km can be described by the wind-driven linear barotropic vorticity dynamics. The TOPEX/POSEIDON altimetric observations of sea level and the wind products of the National Meteorological Center are used as the database for the study. Each term of the linear bamtropic vorticity equation was evaluated by averaging over regions of 10° x 10°. In most of the open ocean, the result of the analysis suggests that the sea level variabilities at the scales considered cannot be fully described by the equation; the apparent net vorticity change is more than what can be explained by the local wind stress curl. In the few ~gions where the wind stress curl is strong enough to balance the vorticity budge~ pmiominantly in the northeast PaeKlc and the southeast Pacific, the balance is basically achieved in terms of the time-dependent topographic Sverdrup relation -the balance between the adveetion of the planetary vorticity plus the topography-induced vorticity and the forcing by the wind stress curl.

Wind–Evaporation Feedback and Abrupt Seasonal Transitions of Weak, Axisymmetric Hadley Circulations

For an imposed thermal forcing localized off the equator, it is known that conservation of absolute angular momentum in axisymmetric flow produces a nonlinear response once the forcing exceeds a critical amplitude. It is shown here that, for a moist atmosphere in convective quasi-equilibrium, the combination of wind-dependent ocean surface enthalpy fluxes and zonal momentum advection can provid...

Rapid response of the East Australian Current to remote wind forcing: The role of barotropic-baroclinic interactions

The strength of the East Australian Current (EAC) is observed to vary in response to changes in basin-scale winds in the South Pacific, with a time lag of three years. First mode baroclinic Rossby waves would take 10–15 years to reach the western boundary from the center of the South Pacific, so a faster mechanism is needed to explain this link. We use an ocean general circulation model forced ...

Evaluation of Turbulence on the Dynamics of Monopile Offshore Wind Turbine under the Wave and Wind Excitations

In recent years, the use of offshore wind turbines has been considered on the agenda of the countries which have a significant maritime boundary due to more speed and stability of wind at sea. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of wind turbulence on the aero-hydrodynamic behavior of offshore wind turbines with a monopile platform. Since in the sea, the wind turbine structures ar...

Numerical simulation of a synoptic event in the Southern California Bight

[1] In the middle of March 2002 a synoptic upwelling event occurred in the Southern California Bight; it was marked by a precipitous cooling of at least 4°C within 10–20 km of the coast. By the end of the month the preevent temperatures had slowly recovered. The Regional Oceanic Model System (ROMS) is used to simulate the event with an atmospheric downscaling reanalysis for surface wind and buo...

The Sensitivity of a Global Ocean Model to Wind Forcing: A Test Using Sea Level and Wind Observations From Satellites and Operational Analysis Lee-Lueng

Investigated in this study is the response of a global ocean general circulation model to forcing provided by two wind products: operational analysis from the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP); observations made by the ERS1 radar scatterometer. The sea level simulated by the model using the two wind fields is compared to the observations made by the TOPE~OSEIDON radar altimete...
