Effects of acoustic–phonetic detail on cross-language speech production

چکیده
Nonnative sounds and sequences are systematically adapted in both perception and production. For example, American English speakers often modify illegal word-initial clusters by inserting a vocalic transition between the two consonants (e.g., (/bdagu/? [bdagu]). Previous work on such modifications has for the most part focused on relatively abstract properties of the nonnative structures, such as their phonemic content and whether they conform to sonority sequencing principles. The current study finds that fine-grained phonetic details of the stimulus can be equally important for predicting cross-language production patterns. Several acoustic–phonetic properties were manipulated to create stimulus variants that are phonemically identical (i.e., exhibit non-contrastive variation) in the target language (Russian). In a shadowing experiment, English speakers’ correct productions and detailed error patterns were significantly modulated by the acoustic manipulations. The results highlight the role of perception in accounting for cross-language production, and establish limits on the perceptual repair of nonnative sound sequences by phonetic decoding. 2014 Elsevier Inc. Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
متن کاملA phonetic assessment of cross-language voice conversion
Cross-language voice conversion maps the speech of speaker S1 in language L1 to the voice of speaker S2 using knowledge only of how S2 speaks a different language L2. This mapping is usually performed using speech material from S1 and S2 that has been deemed “equivalent” in either acoustic or phonetic terms. This study investigates the issue of equivalence in more detail, and contrasts the perf...
متن کاملArticulatory-to-acoustic relations in response to speaking rate and loudness manipulations.
PURPOSE In this investigation, the authors determined the strength of association between tongue kinematic and speech acoustics changes in response to speaking rate and loudness manipulations. Performance changes in the kinematic and acoustic domains were measured using two aspects of speech production presumably affecting speech clarity: phonetic specification and variability. METHOD Tongue ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Size and Type of Vocal Fold Polyp on Some Acoustic Voice Parameters
Background: Vocal abuse and misuse would result in vocal fold polyp. Certain features define the extent of vocal folds polyp effects on voice acoustic parameters. The present study aimed to define the effects of polyp size on acoustic voice parameters, and compare these parameters in hemorrhagic and non-hemorrhagic polyps. Methods: In the present retrospective study, 28 individuals with hemorrha...
متن کاملDetection of phonemic aspiration for spoken Hindi pronunciation evaluation
The computer-assisted learning of spoken language is closely tied to automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology which, as is well known, is challenging with non-native speech. By focusing on specific phonological differences between the target and source languages of non-native speakers, pronunciation assessment can be made more reliable. The four-way contrast of Hindi stops, where voicing a...
