چکیده

In this paper, we report our progress towards the realization of a continuous guided atomic beam in the degenerate regime. So far, we have coupled into a magnetic guide a flux of a few 10 atoms/s at 60 cm/s with a propagation in the guide over more than 2 meters. At this stage, the collision rate is not high enough to start an efficient forced evaporative cooling. Here we describe a new approach to reach the collisional regime. It is based on a pulsed feeding of the magnetic guide at a high repetition rate. The overlap of the packets of atoms occurs in the guide and leads to a continuous guided beam. We discuss different ways to increase the collision rate of this beam while keeping the phase space density constant by shaping the external potential.

Realization of a magnetically guided atomic beam in the collisional regime.

We describe the realization of a magnetically guided beam of cold rubidium atoms, with a flux of 7 x 10(9) atoms/s, a temperature of 400 microK, and a mean velocity of 1 m/s. The rate of elastic collisions within the beam is sufficient to ensure thermalization. We show that the evaporation induced by a radio-frequency wave leads to appreciable cooling and an increase in the phase space density....

Discrete-step evaporation of an atomic beam

We present a theoretical analysis of the evaporative cooling of a magnetically guided atomic beam by means of discrete radio-frequency antennas. First we derive the changes in flux and temperature, as well as in collision rate and phase-space density, for a single evaporation step. Next we show how the occurrence of collisions during the propagation between two successive antennas can be probed...

A moving magnetic mirror to slow down a bunch of atoms

Ultracold and slow beams have a huge potential in metrology, matter wave interferometry and nanolithography [1]. The achievement of an ultracold beam of neutrons was made possible by specularly reflecting neutrons from a Ni-surface which moved along the beam direction [2]. This breakthrough was followed by many achievements, among which neutron optics experiments [3] and neutron interferometry ...

In this paper design and simulation of an optimized accelerator tube is presented for the production of light charged particles up to energy of 2 MeV. Geometry of the accelerator tube electrodes was simulated based on the Van De Graaff accelerator tubes of Atomic Energy Organization by SIMION 7.0, Virtual Device and SIMION Toolkit codes. In accelerator tube, the extracted ion beam from the ion ...

Collisional effects in the formation of cold guided beams of polar molecules

High fluxes of cold polar molecules are efficiently produced by electric guiding and velocity filtering. Here, we investigate different aspects of the beam formation. Variations of the source parameters such as density and temperature result in characteristic changes in the guided beam. These are observed in the velocity distribution of the guided molecules as well as in the dependence of the s...
