چکیده

Active tuning and switching of electromagnetic properties of materials is of great importance for controlling their interaction with electromagnetic waves. In spite of their great promise, previously demonstrated reconfigurable metamaterials are limited in their operation bandwidth due to their resonant nature. Here, we demonstrate a new class of meta-surfaces that exhibit electrically-induced switching in their scattering parameters at room temperature and over a broad range of frequencies. Structural configuration of the subwavelength meta-molecules determines their electromagnetic response to an incident electromagnetic radiation. By reconfiguration of the meta-molecule structure, the strength of the induced electric field and magnetic field in the opposite direction to the incident fields are varied and the scattering parameters of the meta-surface are altered, consequently. We demonstrate a custom-designed meta-surface with switchable scattering parameters at a broad range of terahertz frequencies, enabling terahertz intensity modulation with record high modulation depths and modulation bandwidths through a fully integrated, voltage-controlled device platform at room temperature.

A new class of electrically tunable metamaterial terahertz modulators.

Switchable metamaterials offer unique solutions for efficiently manipulating electromagnetic waves, particularly for terahertz waves, which has been difficult since naturally occurring materials rarely respond to terahertz frequencies controllably. However, few terahertz modulators demonstrated to date exhibit simultaneously low attenuation and high modulation depth. In this letter we propose a...

Broadband diffuse terahertz wave scattering by flexible metasurface with randomized phase distribution

Suppressing specular electromagnetic wave reflection or backward radar cross section is important and of broad interests in practical electromagnetic engineering. Here, we present a scheme to achieve broadband backward scattering reduction through diffuse terahertz wave reflection by a flexible metasurface. The diffuse scattering of terahertz wave is caused by the randomized reflection phase di...

Broadband Terahertz Sensing on Spoof Plasmon Surfaces

In this paper, we show that broadband spectral data can be experimentally extracted from corrugated metallic surfaces consisting of a linear array of subwavelength grooves supporting tightly confined spoof plasmons. Using a combination of the scattering edge coupling method and short-time Fourier transform, we are able to discern the group velocity characteristics of a spoof plasmon pulse, whic...

Active graphene–silicon hybrid diode for terahertz waves

Controlling the propagation properties of the terahertz waves in graphene holds great promise in enabling novel technologies for the convergence of electronics and photonics. A diode is a fundamental electronic device that allows the passage of current in just one direction based on the polarity of the applied voltage. With simultaneous optical and electrical excitations, we experimentally demo...

Statistics of multiply scattered broadband terahertz pulses.

We describe the first measurements of the diffusion of broadband single-cycle optical pulses through a highly scattering medium. Using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, we measure the electric field of a multiply scattered wave with a time resolution shorter than one optical cycle. This time-domain measurement provides information on the statistics of both the amplitude and phase distribution...
