چکیده

A laboratory experiment was conducted to demonstrate the behavior of dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA) in a complex aquifer system. The system simulated consists of two unconfined aquifers separated by a low permeable bedrock perching layer that contains a fracture. In contrast to previous work by other researchers of DNAPL migration in hydrostatic conditions, in this experiment, prior to and during the DNAPL release, ground water flow occurs from the upper to lower aquifer via the fracture. Although the experiment illustrates that DNAPL may migrate rapidly in narrow pathways, the observations were predicted rather well by a simplified analytical solution and a numerical simulation with the multi-phase flow and transport code TOUGH-2. With recharge to the lower aquifer occurring through the fracture, a DNAPL pool did not develop prior to its entry into the fracture.

Dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) source zone characterization: Influence of hydraulic property correlation on predictions of DNAPL infiltration and entrapment

[1] The influence of aquifer property correlation on multiphase fluid migration and entrapment was explored through the use of correlated and uncorrelated porosity, permeability, and capillary pressure-saturation (Pc-Sat) parameter fields in a crosssectional numerical multiphase flow model. Data collected from core samples in a nonuniform sandy aquifer were used to generate three-dimensional aq...

Flow and entrapment of dense nonaqueous phase liquids in physically and chemically heterogeneous aquifer formations

The migration and entrapment of dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) in aquifer formations is typically believed to be controlled by physical heterogeneities. This belief is based upon the assumption that permeability and capillary properties are determined by the soil texture. Capillarity and relative permeability, however, will also depend on porous medium wettability characteristics. This...

Effect of Vegetation on Transport of Groundwater and Nonaqueous-phase Liquid Contaminants

An aquifer model system was established to examine and delineate the presence, fate and transport of nonaqueous-phase liquid (NAPL) contaminants. The system consists of six independent channels with identical dimensions. The channels were constructed with steel bottoms, side panels, and end panels. Trichloroethylene (TCE) was selected as a representative compound to model NAPL groundwater conta...

Effect of S-p Relation Model on DNAPL Migration Simulation Result

To consider effective countermeasures against groundwater contaminated with dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) such as chlorinated solvents, it is first important to understand the mechanism of their migration in heterogeneous aquifer. In addition, numerical analysis models to simulate such a complex migration in heterogeneous aquifer are required. The displacement pressure, which is a mi...

NOTICE IN COMPLIANCE WITH PUBLISHER POLICY: An edited version

[1] The influence of reduced dimensionality (two-dimensional (2-D) versus 3-D) on predictions of dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) infiltration and entrapment in statistically homogeneous, nonuniform permeability fields was investigated using the University of Texas Chemical Compositional Simulator (UTCHEM), a 3-D numerical multiphase simulator. Hysteretic capillary pressure–saturation and ...
