چکیده

In 1958, A.W. Phillips discovered a strong negative correlation between inflation and unemployment in United Kingdom data. Continuing controversy surrounds the long-run trade-off suggested by a curve he drew through these observations. We conduct a wide-ranging investigation of the post-war U.S. Phillips correlations and Phillips curve. Many economists view the Phillips correlations as chimerical, given the rise in both inflation and unemployment during the 197Os, and the Phillips curve as plagued by subtle identification difficulties raised by Lucas and Sargent. Yet, a strikingly stable negative correlation exists over the business cycle, and recent theory indicates the Lucas-Sargent critique may not be empirically relevant. When we estimate the long-run trade-off as Gordon and Solow did, we find it is roughly one-for-one. This traditional Keynesian identification also makes business cycles entirely due to demand shocks. However, the Gordon-Solow model is not the only one that fits the data well. Alternative identifications lead to much more modest effects of demand on business cycles and essentially negligible long-run trade-offs. *We have received many constructive comments on this paper: we particularly thank Charles Evans, Robert J. The History of the Phillips Curve: Consensus and Bifurcation

While the early history of the Phillips curve up to 1975 is well known, less well understood is the post-1975 fork in the road. The left fork developed a theory of policy responses to supply shocks in the context of price stickiness in the non-shocked sector. Its econometric implementation interacts shocks with backward-looking inertia. The right fork approach emphasizes forward-looking expecta...

Inflation Dynamics and the New Keynesian Phillips Curve: An Identification-Robust Econometric Analysis

In this paper, we use identification-robust methods to assess the empirical adequacy of a New Keynesian Phillips Curve (NKPC) equation. We focus on the Gali and Gertler’s (1999) specification, on both U.S. and Canadian data. Two variants of the model are studied: one based on a rationalexpectations assumption, and a modification to the latter which consists in using survey data on inflation exp...

Has Globalization Transformed U.s. Macroeconomic Dynamics?

This paper estimates a structural New Keynesian model to test whether globalization has changed the behavior of U.S. macroeconomic variables. Several key coefficients in the model – such as the slopes of the Phillips and IS curves, the sensitivities of domestic inflation and output to “global” output, and so forth – are allowed in the estimation to depend on the extent of globalization (modeled...

The Case For Context : Eisenhower Post - Revisionism and Third World

In this historiography, the conclusions made by historians of the revisionist camp that assert the hidden handed yet ultimately successful legacy of President Dwight D. Eisenhower is placed under review by considering the work of post-revisionist scholars’ assessment of the Eisenhower administration’s foreign policy decisions during the 1950s. Specifically, the insights and arguments made by su...
