Heterogeneity and Context in Semantic-Web-Enabled HCLS Systems

چکیده
The need for semantics preserving integration of complex data has been widely recognized in the healthcare domain. While standards such as Health Level Seven (HL7) have been developed in this direction, they have mostly been applied in limited, controlled environments, still being used incoherently across countries, organizations, or hospitals. In a more mobile and global society, data and knowledge are going to be commonly exchanged between various systems at Web scale. Specialists in this domain have increasingly argued in favor of using Semantic Web technologies for modeling healthcare data in a well formalized way. This paper provides a reality check in how far current Semantic Web standards can tackle interoperability issues arising in such systems driven by the modeling of concrete use cases on exchanging clinical data and practices. Recognizing the insufficiency of standard OWL to model our scenario, we survey theoretical approaches to extend OWL by modularity and context towards handling heterogeneity in Semantic-Webenabled health care and life sciences (HCLS) systems. We come to the conclusion that none of these approaches addresses all of our use case heterogeneity aspects in its entirety. We finally sketch paths on how better approaches could be devised by combining several existing techniques.

متن کاملHCLS 2.0/3.0: Health care and life sciences data mashup using Web 2.0/3.0
We describe the potential of current Web 2.0 technologies to achieve data mashup in the health care and life sciences (HCLS) domains, and compare that potential to the nascent trend of performing semantic mashup. After providing an overview of Web 2.0, we demonstrate two scenarios of data mashup, facilitated by the following Web 2.0 tools and sites: Yahoo! Pipes, Dapper, Google Maps and GeoComm...
متن کاملSpecial issue on Linked Data for Health Care and the Life Sciences
Health Care and Life Sciences (HCLS) have long been a test-bed for the standards proposed by the W3C to build the Semantic Web1: since HCLS is descriptive by nature and its descriptions have traditionally been produced according to ad-hoc schemas in isolated resources, HCLS offers an ideal use case for technologies like RDF2, SPARQL3 and OWL4 [1,4]. This “marriage” of the HCLS domain with seman...
متن کاملAn Executive Approach Based On the Production of Fuzzy Ontology Using the Semantic Web Rule Language Method (SWRL)
Today, the need to deal with ambiguous information in semantic web languages is increasing. Ontology is an important part of the W3C standards for the semantic web, used to define a conceptual standard vocabulary for the exchange of data between systems, the provision of reusable databases, and the facilitation of collaboration across multiple systems. However, classical ontology is not enough ...
