Spin-Hall effect with quantum group symmetries

چکیده
We construct a model of spin-Hall effect on a noncommutative four sphere S4 θ with isospin degrees of freedom, coming from a noncommutative instanton, and invariance under a quantum group SOθ(5). The corresponding representation theory allows to explicitly diagonalize the Hamiltonian and construct the ground state; there are both integer and fractional excitations. Similar models exist on higher dimensional spheres S Θ and projective spaces CP N Θ . Dedicated to Rafael Sorkin with friendship and respect.

Gauge Symmetries, Topology and Quantisation
The following two loosely connected sets of topics are reviewed in these lecture notes: 1) Gauge invariance, its treatment in field theories and its implications for internal symmetries and edge states such as those in the quantum Hall effect. 2) Quantisation on multiply connected spaces and a topological proof the spin-statistics theorem which avoids quantum field theory and relativity. Under ...
متن کاملDuality in the Quantum Hall Effect - the Rôle of Electron Spin
At low temperatures the phase diagram for the quantum Hall effect has a powerful symmetry arising from the Law of Corresponding States. This symmetry gives rise to an infinite order discrete group which is a generalisation of Kramers-Wannier duality for the two dimensional Ising model. The duality group, which is a subgroup of the modular group, is analysed and it is argued that there is a quan...

We describe the invariant structure common to abelian fractional quantum Hall effect systems with spin. It appears in a generalization of the lattice description of the polarized hierarchy that encompasses both partially polarized and unpolarized ground state systems. We formulate, using the spin-charge decomposition, conditions that should be satisfied so that the description is SU(2) invarian...
متن کاملTime-reversal-symmetry-broken quantum spin Hall effect.
The quantum spin Hall (QSH) state of matter is usually considered to be protected by time-reversal (TR) symmetry. We investigate the fate of the QSH effect in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and an exchange field, which break both inversion and TR symmetries. It is found that the QSH state characterized by nonzero spin Chern numbers C(±) = ±1 persists when the TR symmetry is brok...
متن کاملThe Random Network Model for the Quantum Hall Effect and its Ramifications
The percolation model for electrons in spatial dimension two in a strong perpendicular magnetic field in a spatially correlated random potential is introduced. An overview of the random network model introduced by Chalker and Coddington, and its generalizations, is provided. Based on the ingredients of percolation and quantum tunneling the model is explained. Its localization properties and its...
