Multinational Companies, Technology Spillovers, and Plant Survival: Evidence for Irish Manufacturing

چکیده
This paper argues that multinational companies can impact positively on the survival of plants in the host country through technology spillovers. We study this effect empirically by estimating a Cox proportional hazard model on plant level data for Irish manufacturing. Our results show that, ceteris paribus, the presence of multinationals has a life enhancing effect on indigenous plants in high tech sectors only. JEL Classification: F23, L60

This paper examines the effect of the presence of multinational companies on plant survival in the host country. We postulate that multinational companies can impact positively on plant survival through technology spillovers. We study the nature of the effect of multinationals using a Cox proportional hazard model which we estimate using plant level data for Irish manufacturing industries. Our ...

We investigate how multinational companies can foster economic development of the host country at the micro level. Traditionally the empirical literature measuring spillovers to the host economy arising from foreign direct investment has focused on productivity spillovers, i.e., technological externalities. In this paper we emphasise that pecuniary externalities from multinationals can also be ...

Abstract We investigate the existence of local (within-country) and global (between-country) knowledge spillovers within a single analytical framework by considering specifically the role of agglomeration economies in fostering interactions between these two types of externalities. Our study is based on a database of Irish manufacturing foreign multinational and domestic plants covering the per...
