چکیده

Absolute pitch (AP) is commonly known to be an extremely rare and highly valuable musical ability. However, there are a few reports indicating that AP is relatively prevalent among musicians in East Asia (China and Japan) compared to the West (Deutsch et al., 2006, 2013; Miyazaki et al., 2012). More evidence is needed to shed more light on the prevalence of AP among different countries. On the other hand, the musical significance of AP is called into question by the evidence indicating that some music students having AP performed poorer in identifying or recognizing transposed musical intervals and melodies than those having no AP (Miyazaki, 1995; Miyazaki & Rakowski, 2002). AP is no more than an ability to identify isolated pitches without any context. When we consider the fact that essential elements of music (e.g., melody and harmony) are constructed on the basis of pitch relations independently of AP, far more important is the ability to perceive relative pitch (RP), and AP is almost irrelevant to every aspects of music activities.

Classification of Iranian Traditional Music Dastgahs Using Features Based on Pitch Frequency

The Iranian traditional music is composed of seven majors Dastgahs: Chahargah, Homayoun, Mahour, Segah, Shour, Nava, and Rast-Panjgah. In this paper, a new algorithm for the classification of the Iranian traditional music Dastgahs based on pitch frequency is proposed. In this algorithm, the features of Lagrange coefficients of pitch logarithm (LCPL), Fuzzy similarity sets type 2 (FSST2), and th...

Examining Absolute and Relative Pitch as Automatic Processes via Auditory-Visual Stroop Test

Relative pitch is the ability to identify intervals between pitches, whereas absolute pitch is the less common ability to identify and reproduce musical pitches without reference to other pitches. This study utilized an auditory-visual Stroop test to investigate the automaticity of absolute and relative pitch. Absolute and relative pitch possessors simultaneously heard a piano tone and viewed a...

مطالعه درجات اصلی گام موسیقی ایرانی از روی طیف نتهای گام

In this paper we have extracted the notes of Iranian scale from the traditional music played by the great musician Shahnazi on the TAR. Then, by analyzing the spectrum of the notes and by using our special averaging we have found the pitch attributed to the components’ frequency and found the interval between the notes. The results are in comple agreement with Pythagorean scale. Pitch is a su...

Prevalence of absolute pitch: a comparison between Japanese and Polish music students.

Comparable large-scale surveys including an on-site pitch-naming test were conducted with music students in Japan and Poland to obtain more convincing estimates of the prevalence of absolute pitch (AP) and examine how musical experience relates to AP. Participants with accurate AP (95% correct identification) accounted for 30% of the Japanese music students, but only 7% of the Polish music stud...
