چکیده

ABSTRACT Today’s cheaper personal computers with improved computational power have made the technology of networked desktop virtual reality environments accessible to typical end users, including students. This paper describes C–VISions, a collaborative virtual environment developed to support interactive and collaborative learning using virtual simulations. The research effort is grounded on the principles of active, experiential learning and constructivist/social constructivist ideas, with their attendant commitment to group sense making, discourse-based learning, and community building processes. The paper also provides an overview of the system’s design and implementation. Finally, we explain the current status of the research effort and articulate plans for future work.

Networked Virtual Environments for Collaborative Learning

In this invited talk, I examine how the technologies of networking and desktop virtual reality can be used to enhance the quality of student learning. I use the C–VISions (Collaborative Virtual Interactive Simulations) system, developed at the National University of Singapore, as an exemplar system to help the audience appreciate the unique advantages that the technology affords for student lea...

Conceptual Conflict by Design: Dealing with Students' Learning Impasses in Multi-user Multi-agent Virtual Worlds

This paper describes current work directed at dealing with students’ learning impasses that can arise when they are unable to make further learning progress while interacting in a 3D virtual world. This kind of situation may occur when group members do not possess the requisite knowledge needed to bootstrap themselves out of their predicament or when all group members mistakenly believe that th...

Virtual Reality in Education: Rooting Learning in Experience

There has been a general tendency for learning to get further removed from experience as students progress from primary education, through secondary education, and to tertiary education. Learning becomes more language-based, conceptual, and abstract. There are important side effects. In the domain of physics, for example, it is well known that many students can readily solve physics problems dr...

Real-time collaboration of virtual laboratories through the Internet

Web-based learning environments are becoming increasingly popular in higher education. One of the most important web learning resources is the virtual laboratory (VL), which gives students an easy way for training and learning through the Internet. Moreover, on-line collaborative communication represents a practical method to transmit the knowledge and experience from the teacher to students ov...

Affordances and Limitations of Immersive Participatory Augmented Reality Simulations for Teaching and Learning

The purpose of this study was to document how teachers and students describe and comprehend the ways in which participating in an augmented reality (AR) simulation aids or hinders teaching and learning. Like the multi-user virtual environment (MUVE) interface that underlies Internet games, AR is a good medium for immersive collaborative simulation, but has different strengths and limitations th...
