Geometric Diffeomorphism Finiteness in Low Dimensions and Homotopy Group Finiteness

چکیده
Our main result asserts that for any given numbers C and D the class of simply connected closed smooth manifolds of dimension m < 7 which admit a Riemannian metric with sectional curvature bounded in absolute value by |K| ≤ C and diameter uniformly bounded from above by D contains only finitely many diffeomorphism types. Thus in these dimensions the lower positive bound on volume in Cheeger’s Finiteness Theorem can be replaced by a purely topological condition, simply-connectedness. In dimension 4 instead of simply-connectedness here only non-vanishing of the Euler characteristic has to be required. As a topological corollary we obtain that for k+ l < 7 there are over a given smooth closed l-manifold only finitely many principal T k bundles with simply connected and non-diffeomorphic total spaces. Furthermore, for any given numbers C and D and any dimension m it is shown that for each i ∈ N there are up to isomorphism always only finitely many possibilities for the ith homotopy group of a simply connected closed m-manifold which admits a metric with curvature |K| ≤ C and diameter ≤ D.

The Geometric Finiteness Obstruction
The purpose of this paper is to develop a geometric approach to Wall's finiteness obstruction. We will do this for equivariant CW-complexes. The main advantage will be that we can derive all the formal properties of the equivariant finiteness obstruction easily from this geometric description. Namely, the obstruction property, homotopy invariance, the sum and product formulas, and the restricti...

Our main results can be stated as follows: 1. For any given numbers m, C and D, the class of m-dimensional simply connected closed smooth manifolds with finite second homotopy groups which admit a Riemannian metric with sectional curvature bounded in absolute value by |K| ≤ C and diameter uniformly bounded from above by D contains only finitely many diffeomorphism types. 2. Given any m and any ...
متن کاملNon-finiteness Properties of Fundamental Groups of Smooth Projective Varieties
For each integer n ≥ 2, we construct an irreducible, smooth, complex projective variety M of dimension n, whose fundamental group has infinitely generated homology in degree n + 1 and whose universal cover is a Stein manifold, homotopy equivalent to an infinite bouquet of n-dimensional spheres. This non-finiteness phenomenon is also reflected in the fact that the homotopy group πn(M), viewed as...
متن کاملOn Finiteness of Kleinian Groups in General Dimension
In this paper we provide a criteria for geometric finiteness of Kleinian groups in general dimension. We formulate the concept of conformal finiteness for Kleinian groups in space of dimension higher than two, which generalizes the notion of analytic finiteness in dimension two. Then we extend the argument in the paper of Bishop and Jones to show that conformal finiteness implies geometric fini...
