چکیده

The modular construction of colonial organisms can generate complex growth patterns that incorporate both growth and partial mortality. These patterns often confound simple age based descriptions of growth but, in some cases, modularity can generate predictable patterns of colony growth that are amenable to modeling approaches more commonly used in unitary organisms. Colonies of the Caribbean gorgonian Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae from a 20 m deep population in the Bahamas exhibit such characteristics. Mass was highly predictable from colony height, following a power function with an exponent of 2.1. Age, as determined from counts of annual growth rings was a good predictor of height and mass. The relationship between age and height was modeled using a Von Bertalanffy growth curve. Growth models from both the age:height relationship and from extrapolations of colony growth rates from another Bahamian population yielded similar but more variable results. Based on those data and previously published observations of spawning and survivorship, colonies reach sexual maturity at 5–7 y and can live to over 40 y. Using the Von Bertalanffy function to estimate ages from height facilitates interpretation of size frequency distributions and suggested enhanced recruitment on San Salvador Island following the passage of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Although simple growth models do not characterize the variance inherent in modular growth, these models can provide useful tools for the interpretation of population data. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Patterns of morphological integration in marine modular organisms: supra-module organization in branching octocoral colonies.

Despite the relative simplicity of their modular growth, marine invertebrates such as arborescent gorgonian octocorals (Octocorallia: Cnidaria) generate complex colonial forms. Colony form in these taxa is a consequence of modular (polyp) replication, and if there is a tight integration among modular and supramodular traits (e.g. polyp aperture, inter-polyp spacing, branch thickness, internode ...

Short Term Growth Rate of Acropora downingi in the Coral Reef of Hengam Island, the Persian Gulf

In the Persian Gulf, Acropora- dominated coral reefs have been damaged by global and local disturbances. Inversion of coral colonies mostly occur due to anchoring and fishing in many coral reefs, particularly those established nearby human societies, like the coral reef of Hengam Island, in the Persian Gulf. The short term growth rates (weight increment) of inversely and normally transplanted c...

Bloom of the cyanobacterium Moorea bouillonii on the gorgonian coral Annella reticulata in Japan

Coral populations are in decline due to environmental changes and biological attacks by predators and infectious diseases. Here, we report a localized bloom of the benthic filamentous cyanobacterium Moorea bouillonii (formerly Lyngbya bouillonii) observed exclusively on the gorgonian (sea fan) coral Annella reticulata at around 20 m depth in Japan. The degree of infection has reached 26% among ...

A Five-Year, In Situ Growth Study on Shallow-Water Populations of the Gorgonian Octocoral Calcigorgia spiculifera in the Gulf of Alaska

Gorgonian octocorals are the most abundant corals in Alaska where they provide important structural habitat for managed species of demersal fish and invertebrates. Fifty-nine gorgonian species have been reported from Alaska waters but little is known about their life history characteristics to help us gauge their ability to recover from seafloor disturbance. Colonies of the holaxonian Calcigorg...

Methods and measurement variance for field estimations of coral colony planar area using underwater photographs and semi-automated image segmentation.

Size and growth rates for individual colonies are some of the most essential descriptive parameters for understanding coral communities, which are currently experiencing worldwide declines in health and extent. Accurately measuring coral colony size and changes over multiple years can reveal demographic, growth, or mortality patterns often not apparent from short-term observations and can expos...
