Contribution of prosody to the perception of a foreign accent: a study based on Spanish/Italian modified speech

چکیده
In this article, we attempt to quantify the contribution of prosody (timing and melody) to the perception of a foreign accent, by using a prosodic transplantation paradigm. For this experiment, a dozen sentences, which are spoken in (almost) the same way in Italian and Spanish, were recorded. They were read by 3 Spanish monolinguals, 3 Italian monolinguals and 3 Spanish/Italian bilinguals (once in the Spanish way, once in the Italian way). Prosody crossings were performed, and perceptual tests were run with Italian, Spanish and French listeners. Results suggest that prosody outweighs segmental cues in the perception of Spanish-accented Italian and Italianaccented Spanish.

The Contribution of Prosody to the Perception of Foreign Accent
The general goal of this study was to expand our understanding of what is meant by 'foreign accent'. More specifically, it deals with the role of prosody (timing and melody), which has rarely been examined. New technologies, including diphone speech synthesis (experiment 1) and speech manipulation (experiment 2), are used to study the relative importance of prosody in what is perceived as a for...
متن کاملForeign accent identification based on prosodic parameters
In this paper we propose an automatic approach for foreign accent identification. Knowledge of the speaker’s origin allows to adapt acoustic models for non-native speech recognition. In this study, we use a statistical approach based on prosodic parameters. This approach relies on the fact that prosody is different between languages, and has been done within the framework of the HIWIRE (Human I...

This study investigates the acoustic characteristics of non-native speech which give rise to the perception of a foreign accent. Japanese speech samples were collected from L1 English and Mandarin speakers studying Japanese. The acoustic patterns of the L2 and native speech were related to the accentedness ratings of the speech provided by native Japanese listeners. Results indicate the importa...

This study investigates the cumulative effect of (non-)native intonation, rhythm, and speech rate in utterances produced by Spanish learners of Dutch on Dutch native listeners’ perceptions. In order to assess the relative contribution of these language-specific properties to perceived accentedness and comprehensibility, speech produced by Spanish learners of Dutch was manipulated using transpla...
متن کاملOn improving the perception of foreign-accented speech
The present study investigates the perception of foreign-accented speech. It seeks to address the issue of whether systematic exposure to a representative sample of speech from a specific foreign accent improves comprehension of that accent. In this study, perception of Spanish-accented English was examined before and after a training regimen that involved exposure to a range or word-level Span...
