چکیده
ing enzyme for the inhibitory neurotransmitter, y-aminobutyric acid. Immunocytochemical methods were used to localize GAD within neuronal sornata and dendrites that had the features of aspinous and sparsely-spinous stellate cells. In addition, GAD-immunoreactive axon terminals formed symmetric synapses with every neuronal type in the cerebral cortex. The results indicated that some stellate neurons provide cortical inhibition. [The SCl~indicates that this paper has been cited in over 230 publications.1

Aspinous and sparsely-spinous stellate neurons in the visual cortex of rats contain glutamic acid decarboxylase.
Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), the enzyme that synthesizes the neurotransmitter gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA), has been localized in the rat visual cortex by immunocytochemical methods with both light and electron microscopy. In both colchicine-injected and non-injected preparations of the visual cortex, GAD-positive reaction product was observed in somata, proximal dendrites and axon ter...
متن کاملThe projection of the lateral geniculate nucleus to area 17 of the rat cerebral cortex. V. Degenerating axon terminals synapsing with Golgi impregnated neurons.
The sites of termination of afferents from the lateral geniculate nucleus to layer IV and lower layer III in area 17 of the rat visual cortex have been determined by use of a combined degeneration--Golgi/EM technique. Degeneration of geniculocortical axon terminals was produced by making lesions in the lateral geniculate body. After the animals had been allowed to survive for two days, the ipsi...
متن کاملSmooth or sparsely spined cells with myelinated axons in rat visual cortex.
Golgi impregnated multipolar and bitufted neurons with smooth or sparsely spined dendrites and myelinated axons from rat visual cortex have been examined by light microscopy and by a combined lightand electron-microscopic technique. There is a morphological continuum between the multipolar and bitufted varieties of neurons and such cells occur throughout layers III through VI. In general the ne...
متن کاملGlutamic acid decarboxylase immunoreactivity in layer IV of barrel cortex of rat and mouse.
The morphology and distribution of neurons and terminals that are immunoreactive to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) were investigated in barrel cortex of the rat and mouse. The morphology of the GAD-immunoreactive neurons located in layer IV of the barrel field resembles that of the large, smooth stellate neurons described previously in Golgi studies. Most of the somas of GAD-positive neurons...
متن کاملSignificant Changes in the Activity of L-Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase of Mouse Hypothalamus After Peripheral Injection of Cholecystokinin-8 and Caerulein
The activity of one of the metabolizing enzymes of - aminobutyric acid, (GABA), was determined in mouse hypothalamus after peripheral injections of cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8) and caerulein (CLN). The activity of this rate-limiting enzyme, L-glutamic acid decarboxylase, (GAD), did not change thirty minutes after peripheral injections of either CCK-8 or CLN in doses of 50g/kg body weight. Howeve...
