Multimode laser model with coupled cavities and quantum noise

چکیده
A stochastic, semiclassical model is developed for a multimode, homogeneously broadened laser with rapid dipole dephasing, appropriate for semiconductor, Ti:sapphire, or dye lasers. The theory self-consistently incorporates population dynamics including temporal beating effects and relaxation oscillations, spatial hole burning, coherent-wave mixing, and quantum noise. The model is valid for singleand compound-cavity lasers in which the mode frequencies are well defined. We pay particular attention to finding a useful mode basis in the case that the gain medium does not completely fill the cavity. This situation can lead to coupled-cavity effects. For typical systems the model is valid for pump rates up to several times threshold and is tractable for numerical simulations. The theoretical development described in this paper is applied to an experimental system in a companion paper (J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 14, 180 (1997)]. © 1997 Optical Society of America. Travelling Wave Model of a Multimode Fabry-p Erot Laser in Free Running and External Cavity Conngurations
We report the results of a numerical study of multimode behavior of a Fabry-P erot laser. The model is based on travelling-wave equations for the slowly varying amplitudes of the counterpropagating waves in the cavity, coupled to equations for spatially dependent population inversion and polarization of a two-level active medium. Variations in the material variables on the scale of a wavelength...
متن کاملDicke quantum spin glass of atoms and photons.
Recent studies of strongly interacting atoms and photons in optical cavities have rekindled interest in the Dicke model of atomic qubits coupled to discrete photon cavity modes. We study the multimode Dicke model with variable atom-photon couplings. We argue that a quantum spin-glass phase can appear, with a random linear combination of the cavity modes superradiant. We compute atomic and photo...
متن کاملIntermodal Stability of a Coupled-Cavity Semiconductor Laser
We present an analysis of the steady-state operation of a two-element coupled-cavity laser near a mode hop. The equations of motion for the two cavities and two relevant modes of a longitudinally coupled-cavity laser are reduced to a system of nondimensional nonlinear ordinary differential equations which describe a general two-element laser. The equations are then solved and the stability of t...
متن کاملSub shot-noise fluctuations in the intensity sum of two coupled beams
A quantum analysis of intensity fluctuations for the above-threshold parametric four-wave mixing in a cavity, driven by two laser fields, is presented. A new possibility for the reduction of quantum fluctuations below the shot-noise level in the sum of intensities of two cavity-output coupled beams at the driving field frequencies is predicted. The calculation of the corresponding interbeam sec...
متن کاملDynamic multimode analysis of Q-switched solid state laser cavities.
We derive a new model and simulation technique called "Dynamic Multimode Analysis (DMA)" to simulate the 3-dimensional dynamic behavior of a laser. A Gaussian mode analysis is used to obtain resonator eigenmodes taking into account thermal aberrations. These modes are coupled by a set of rate equations to describe the dynamic behavior of the individual modes for cw and Q-switched lasers. Our ap...
