Fire and Fire Surrogate Study in the Sierra Nevada: Evaluating Restoration Treatments at Blodgett Forest and Sequoia National Park

چکیده
Management practices have altered both the structure and function of forests throughout the United States. Some of the most dramatic changes have resulted from fire exclusion, especially in forests that historically experienced relatively frequent, lowto moderateintensity fire regimes. In the Sierra Nevada, fire exclusion is believed to have resulted in widespread vegetation changes, including greater density and cover of white fir (Abies concolor) and reduction in the area occupied by hardwoods and shrubs (Parsons and DeBenedetti 1979, Vankat and Major 1978). Fire exclusion has allowed both live and dead woody fuels to accumulate, increasing the probability of large, high-severity, stand-replacing fires (Stephens 1998, van Wagtendonk 1985).

Long-term Surface Fuel Accumulation in Burned and Unburned Mixed-conifer Forests of the Central and Southern Sierra Nevada, Ca (usa)
After nearly a century of fire exclusion in many central and southern Sierra Nevada mixedconifer forests, dead and down surface fuels have reached high levels without the recurring fires that consume the accumulated organic matter. The effects of prescribed fires used to reduce fuel loads and restore fire have been monitored in Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks for over 30 year...
متن کاملCan Low-Severity Fire Reverse Compositional Change in Montane Forests of the Sierra Nevada, California, USA?
Throughout the Sierra Nevada, nearly a century of fire suppression has altered the tree species composition, forest structure, and fire regimes that were previously characteristic of montane forests. Species composition is fundamentally important because species differ in their tolerances to fire and environmental stressors, and these differences dictate future forest structure and influence fi...
متن کاملLandscape Pattern and Ecological Process in the Sierra Nevada
The Sierran Global Change Program in Sequoia-Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks includes a nearly decade-long integrated study of the interactions between climate, forest processes, and fire. This study is characterized by three recurring themes: (1) the use of systems-level models as a framework for integration and synthesis, (2) an effort to extrapolate an understanding from the local s...
متن کاملReference Conditions for Giant Sequoia Forest Restoration: Structure, Process, and Precision
National Park Service policy directs that more natural conditions be restored to giant sequoia groves, which have been altered by a century of fire exclusion. Efforts to find a reasonable and practical definition of ‘‘natural’’ have helped drive scientists and land managers to use past grove conditions as reference conditions for restoration. Extensive research aimed at determining reference co...
متن کاملProjecting Impacts of Fire Management on a Biodiversity Indicator in the Sierra Nevada and Cascades, USA: The Black-Backed Woodpecker
In the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade ranges of California and Oregon, a genetically distinct population of the black-backed woodpecker has become rare due, in part, to fire suppression. This species is considered an indicator species for its primary habitat: early successional burned forests with an abundance of standing dead trees. Fuel reduction treatments such as post-fire logging, and ...
