Quantum fields on timelike curves

چکیده
A quantum field Φ(x) exists at an event x ∈ M of space-time (M, g) in general only as a quadratic form Φ(x). Only after smearing Φ(x) with a smooth test function f we get an operator Φ(f). In this paper the question is considered whether it is possible as well to smear Φ(x) with a singular test function T (i.e. test distributions) supported by a smooth timelike curve γ. It is shown that this is always possible if Φ(x) satisfies the micro local spectrum condition and T belongs to a special class of distributions which retain some regularity in timelike directions (i.e. along γ). In the free field case these results are used to define some kind of time-translation along γ which generalizes global space-time translations of Minkowski space.

Quantum coherence and closed timelike curves.
Various calculations of the S matrix have shown that it seems to be non unitary for interacting fields when there are closed timelike curves. It is argued that this is because there is loss of quantum coherence caused by the fact that part of the quantum state circulates on the closed timelike curves and is not measured at infinity. A prescription is given for calculating the superscattering ma...

We examine consequences of the density matrix approach to quantum theory in the context of a model spacetime containing closed timelike curves. We find that in general, an initially pure state will evolve in a nonlinear way to a mixed quantum state. CPT invariance and the implications of this nonlinearity for the statistical interpretation of quantum theory are discussed.
متن کاملA Quantum Weak Energy Inequality for Dirac Fields in Curved Spacetime
Quantum fields are well known to violate the weak energy condition of general relativity: the renormalised energy density at any given point is unbounded from below as a function of the quantum state. By contrast, for the scalar and electromagnetic fields it has been shown that weighted averages of the energy density along timelike curves satisfy ‘quantum weak energy inequalities’ (QWEIs) which...

In the appearance of absorption material, the quantum vacuum fluctuations of all kinds of fields may be smoothed out and the spacetime with time machine may be stable against vacuum fluctuations. The chronology protection conjecture might break down, and the anti-chronology protection conjecture might hold: There is no law of physics preventing the appearance of closed timelike curves.
