Verifiability in Electronic Voting - an Interdisciplinary View

چکیده
Verifiability is an important component of elections. It is related to aspects like trust in the correctness of the election results, transparency of the election processes, and preparation for a possible contestation of the election. In particular the last aspect is of crucial importance in legally regulated elections. Verifiability in this context means that voting systems must be designed correspondingly and must generate appropriate data during the voting process so that after determination of the election result the correctness of this result can be made evident. One may expect that voting systems without accepted methods for verification would not prevail.

Verifiability and Other Technical Requirements for Online Voting Systems
When developing a catalogue of technical requirements for online voting systems to be used in legally ruled, non-parliamentary elections, major interdisciplinary problems arise which currently cannot be solved. Technical requirements are not yet definable due to lacking legal preconditions, and legal definitions are not yet definable due to lacking technical experience. Problems of this type ar...
متن کاملVerifiability in Electronic Voting - Explanations for Non Security Experts
Scientists have requested verifiable electronic voting schemes for many years. These schemes offer individual and universal verifiability by applying and combining complex cryptographic primitives and protocols. Electronic voting systems in use provide less or even no verifiability. Thus election authorities and voters need to trust the provider and developer of the voting system regarding the ...
متن کاملPrivacy and verifiability in electronic voting
Privacy and verifiability refer to fundamental principles of democratic elections and therefore belong to the set of established security requirements which each electronic voting scheme is expected to meet. However, very different ideas and opinions about privacy and verifiability exist in the scientific community, which shows that both properties are not well understood yet. Moreover, althoug...
متن کاملVerification and Validation Issues in Electronic Voting
Electronic democracy (e-democracy) is a necessity in this era of computers and information technology. Electronic election (e-election) is one of the most important applications of e-democracy, because of the importance of the voters’ privacy and the possibility of frauds. Electronic voting (e-voting) is the most significant part of e-election, which refers to the use of computers or computeris...
متن کاملUsability Analysis of Helios - An Open Source Verifiable Remote Electronic Voting System
Currently, rather secure cryptographic voting protocols providing verifiability exist. However, without adequate usability and abstraction concepts to explain the voting process and, in particular, the verifiability steps, they are not ready for legally binding elections. This holds in particular for remote electronic voting systems because of the absence of poll workers who can support voters ...
