Prevalence o f Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Graphite Miners by
نویسنده
چکیده
Pulmonary tuberculosis is relatively frequent in workers exposed to silica or a mixed dust containing silica (Marchand, 1972). This increased susceptibility has been shown in relation to silica itself (Hunter, i962),coal (Rivers, James, Davies & Thompson, 1957) and talc (Siegal, Smith & Grecnburg, 1943). Since graphite too contains a proportion of silica which is about 2 % in the purest commercial product, one may expect to find an increased frequency of tuberculosis among graphite miners. There are few references in the literature on the association of tuberculosis and exposure to graphite dust. Hirsch, Kaas, Schaefer & Denst (1959) described a case of graphite pneumoconiosis where Battey type of non-tuber culous mycobacteria was isolated. Uragoda (19720) described 3 cases of pulmonary tuber culosis in graphite miners. Uragoda (19726) also reported a case of graphite pneumoconiosis winch was subsequently complicated by tuberculosis. However, there has been no report on the incidence or prevalence of tuberculosis in graphite miners.

متن کاملA Century of Miners’ Phthisis on the South African Gold Mines. Any End in Sight?
Since its inception in 1886, high rates of occupational lung disease, particularly “miners’ phthisis” (silicosis and/or pulmonary tuberculosis) and accompanying racial disparities have been a feature of the South African gold mining industry. While mortality from silicosis and pulmonary tuberculosis fell among white miners during the first half of the 20th century, there was scanty information ...

One of the recommended strategies for preventing tuberculosis is to screen high-risk populations with respect to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) infection. The aim of the present study was to investigate latent infection and active tuberculosis in people with close household contact. It was a cross-sectional descriptive, analytical study with the sample size of 668 people from homes with one in...
متن کاملThe risk of pulmonary tuberculosis in underground copper miners in Zambia exposed to respirable silica: a cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) among underground miners exposed to silica remains a global problem. Although well described in gold and coal mining, risk in other mining entities are not as well documented. This study aims to determine dust-related dose response risk for PTB among underground miners exposed to silica dust in Zambia's copper mines. METHODS A cross sectional study of i...
