چکیده

Three-body effects greatly complicate stellar evolution. We model the effects of encounters of binaries with single stars, based on parameters chosen from conditions prevalent in the cores of globular clusters. For our three-body encounters, we start with a population of primordial binaries, and choose incoming stars from the evolving single star populations of paper I. In addition, we study the formation of new binaries through tidal capture among the single stars. In subsequent papers in this series, we will combine stellar evolution with the dynamics of a full N -body system.

Star cluster ecology I. A cluster core with encounters between single stars

Star clusters with a high central density contain an ecological network of evolving binaries, affected by interactions with passing stars, while in turn affecting the energy budget of the cluster as a whole by giving off binding energy. This is the first paper in a series aimed at providing the tools for increasingly realistic simulations of these ecological networks. Here we model the core of ...

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Dynamics and Interactions of Binaries and Neutron Stars in Globular Clusters Dynamics and Interactions of Binaries and Neutron Stars in Globular Clusters

We model the dynamics of test binaries in isotropic, multi-mass models of galactic globular clusters. The evolution of binary orbits through the cluster potentials is modeled, including second order diiusion terms, and probabilities for close encounters with eld stars are calculated. We carry out Monte Carlo simulations of the eeects of the binary{single star encounters on the binary population...

On the onset of runaway stellar collisions in dense star clusters I . Dynamics of the first collision

We study the circumstances under which first collisions occur in young and dense star clusters. The initial conditions for our direct N-body simulations are chosen such that the clusters experience core collapse within a few million years, before the most massive stars have left the main-sequence. It turns out that the first collision is typically driven by the most massive stars in the cluster...
