Distributed Popularity Indices

چکیده
Distributed hash tables (DHTs) are a distributed, peer-topeer analogue of hash indices in database systems. Given a key, a DHT returns a pointer to the associated object. DHTs have also be extended to support “keyword” queries [5, 2] (object identified by multiple keys). Fundamentally, however, these approaches all return a undirected sample of the full result set. Unfortunately, most applications are interested in the most popular members of the result set. In other words, if all the objects in the result set were to be ranked in descending order of the number of accesses to the object in a given time interval, the application’s interest decreases the further down the ranked list it goes. We are developing distributed popularity indices (DPIs). Suppose a DHT supports two query primitives. The first simply finds an object given a key:

Exploiting Local Popularity To Prune Routing Indices In Peer-to-Peer System
Routing in unstructured peer-to-peer system relies either on broadcasting (also called flooding) or on Routing Indices. An approach using Routing Indices is only scalable if the Routing Indices are of manageable size. In this paper, we present a strategy to prune Routing Indices based on the popularity of resources. The Routing Indices maintain routing information for queries to the most popula...
متن کاملP-INDEX - a fair alternative to H-INDEX
The popular Hirsch index is used as a criterion for evaluating the achievements of scientists, departments, universities, and countries. Unfortunately, this index is often unfair in view of various scientific disciplines, can easily be manipulated, so its usefulness is undermined by unfair competition. To address these problems, this paper introduces a set of new popularity indices which evalua...
متن کاملArtist Popularity: Do Web and Social Music Services Agree?
Recommendations based on the most popular products in a catalogue is a common technique when information about users is scarce or absent. In this paper we explore different ways to measure popularity in the music domain; more specifically, we define four indices based on three social music services and on web clicks. Our study shows, first, that for most of the indices the popularity is a rathe...
متن کاملExploring the Popularity, Reputation and Certification of User-Generated Software
User-Generated Content has reshaped the landscape of the Information Marketplace during the last years. Among the content, software is a very impacting class. In comparison to regular resource, the estimation of popularity, reputation and certification of user-generated software in distributed architecture appears to be a challenging task. Furthermore how to use popularity to help user to disco...
متن کاملGutenTag: A Multi-Term Caching Optimized Tag Query Processor for Key-Value Based NoSQL Storage Systems
NoSQL systems are more and more deployed as back-end infrastructure for large-scale distributed online platforms like Google, Amazon or Facebook. Their applicability results from the fact that most services of online platforms access the stored data objects via their primary key. However, NoSQL systems do not efficiently support services referring more than one data object, e.g. the term-based ...
