Comparing Suffering Across Species
نویسنده
چکیده
Moral life often presents us with trade-offs between the sufferings of some individuals and the sufferings of others. Researchers may need to consider, for example, whether the suffering imposed on animals by a certain line of medical experimentation justifies the relief that the resulting discoveries may bring to (human or non-human) others. Often in such cases, the suffering of some individuals is incomparable with—that is neither greater than nor less than nor equal to— the suffering of others. While this complicates moral decision-making across species, it does not undermine it. John Nolt University of Tennessee, Knoxville [email protected]

Forest degradation influences ecosystem sustainability and reduces plant species diversity. Plantations with coniferous trees in degraded ecosystems help the native species to become established and play a major role in preserving and improving plant diversity. This study aims at measuring and comparing the woody species diversity across different age classes of Pinus brutia and Cupressus horiz...

متن کاملA general multivariate extension of Fisher's geometrical model and the distribution of mutation fitness effects across species.
The evolution of complex organisms is a puzzle for evolutionary theory because beneficial mutations should be less frequent in complex organisms, an effect termed "cost of complexity." However, little is known about how the distribution of mutation fitness effects (f(s)) varies across genomes. The main theoretical framework to address this issue is Fisher's geometric model and related phenotypi...
متن کاملComparing Patterns of Natural Selection across Species Using Selective Signatures
Comparing gene expression profiles over many different conditions has led to insights that were not obvious from single experiments. In the same way, comparing patterns of natural selection across a set of ecologically distinct species may extend what can be learned from individual genome-wide surveys. Toward this end, we show how variation in protein evolutionary rates, after correcting for ge...
متن کاملNotes About Comparing Long-term Care Expenditures Across Countries; Comment on “Financing Long-term Care: Lessons From Japan”
The comparison of long-term care (LTC) expenditures is a difficult task. National LTC systems differ widely in terms of eligibility criteria, level of benefits, institutional variety and regional heterogeneity. In this commentary I will first give some general remarks on cross country comparisons. Then I discuss the role of the informal sector which is the most importan...
