Optimal Liquidation of Derivative Portfolios

چکیده
We consider the problem facing a risk averse agent who seeks to liquidate or exercise a portfolio of (infinitely divisible) perpetual American style options on a single underlying asset. The optimal liquidation strategy is of threshold form and can be characterised explicitly as the solution of a calculus of variations problem. Apart from a possible initial exercise of a tranche of options, the optimal behaviour involves liquidating the portfolio in infinitesimal amounts, but at times which are singular with respect to calendar time. We consider a number of illustrative examples involving CRRA and CARA utility, stocks and portfolios of options with different strikes, and a model where the act of exercising has an impact on the underlying asset price.

Adaptive basket liquidation
We consider the infinite time-horizon optimal basket portfolio liquidation problem for a von NeumannMorgenstern investor in a multi-asset extension of the liquidity model of Almgren (2003) with cross-asset impact. Using a stochastic control approach, we establish a “separation theorem”: the sequence of portfolios held during an optimal liquidation depends only on the (co-)variance and (cross-as...
متن کاملMinimal Distance Martingale Measures and Optimal Portfolios Consistent with Observed Market Prices
In this paper we study derivative pricing under information on observed market prices of some derivatives. To this purpose we characterize minimal distance martingale measures under constraints on a finite number of random variables with respect to f -divergence distances in a general semimartingale setting. As a result a characterization of optimal portfolios of the underlyings and the given d...
متن کاملDerivative Portfolio Hedging Based on CVaR
The use of derivatives can lead to higher yields and lower funding costs. In addition, derivatives are indispensable tools for risk management. We analyze the derivative portfolio hedging problems based on value at risk (VaR) and conditional value at risk (CVaR). We show that these derivative portfolio optimization problems are often ill-posed and the resulting optimal portfolios frequently inc...
متن کاملOptimal Liquidation of a Call Spread
We study the optimal liquidation strategy for a call spread in the case when the market uses an over-estimated volatility to price options. The problem is formulated as an optimal stopping problem, which we solve explicitly.
متن کاملA Complete Explicit Solution to the Log-Optimal Portfolio Problem
Kramkov and Schachermayer (1999) proved the existence of log-optimal portfolios under weak assumptions in a very general setting. For many – but not all – cases, Goll and Kallsen (2000) obtained the optimal solution explicitly in terms of the semimartingale characteristics of the price process. By extending this result, this paper provides a complete explicit characterization of log-optimal por...
