چکیده

The presented work addresses the development of analytical tests for disturbed FM radio broadcast audio signals, in particular the discussion of improved orthogonal analyses for the detection of different kinds of disturbances in such scenarios. Two main aspects are in focus: The analyses shall predict the expected results of auditory listening tests for music and speech playback in vehicles, i.e. show a high correlation to auditory test results. Secondly, the analyses shall be capable to determine the individual contribution of the various typical FM radio broadcast disturbances on auditory quality. Thus, the different analyses must be orthogonal to each other. This paper introduces a new approach for the detection of the very annoying "‘pops"’ caused by multipath transmission. Furthermore, new listening tests were conducted with heterogeneous audio test material provided by different car and receiver manufacturers in order to verify the suitability of the whole set of analyses.

Analytical Analysis of Disturbed Radio Broadcast

Analog radio broadcast signals are often disturbed in various ways as experienced in driving situations. These disturbances cover typical short term “pops”, longer noise bursts, short term “mutes”, insertion of so-called “HighCut” (i.e. the attenuation of higher frequencies to mask disturbances) or noticeable stereo/mono switching. These disturbances can be separated in two parts: they are caus...

Broadcast Routing in Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks: A Particle Swarm optimization Approach

While routing in multi-hop packet radio networks (static Ad-hoc wireless networks), it is crucial to minimize power consumption since nodes are powered by batteries of limited capacity and it is expensive to recharge the device. This paper studies the problem of broadcast routing in radio networks. Given a network with an identified source node, any broadcast routing is considered as a directed...

Interleaving IBOC Signals for a Digital HD Radio Multiplex

With increased saturation of the VHF band II used for FM, few frequencies are available for new radio stations in many markets. This paper describes the benefits of using the In Band On Channel (IBOC) signal in an all-digital configuration to boost the number of effective audio services in the FM band. A new method of creating an all-digital IBOC signal configuration is described. Multiple inst...

Automatic Song Identification in Noisy Broadcast Audio

Automatic identification of music titles and copyright enforcement of audio material has become a topic of great interest. One of the main problems with broadcast audio is that the received audio suffers several transformations before reaching the listener (equalizations, noise, speaker over the audio, parts of the songs are changed or removed, etc.) and, therefore, the original and the broadca...

Towards a Software-radio Enabled Broadcast Media Navigator

New consumer services are transforming the Hertzian broadcast media into a rich source of multimedia content. A Broadcast Media Navigator combining Softare Radio elements with Audio Indexing techniques and digital audio recording is proposed. Results from a PC-based demonstrator implementaing a simple speech/music discriminator are presented.
