Limitations of ECG in Diagnosing Pulmonary Embolism

چکیده
In the article "The ECG in Pulmonary Embolism" by Ferrari et al (March 1997),1 the authors report their experience with the use of ECG in monitoring the workouts of patients with pulmo¬ nary embolism (PE). They found that the pattern of inverted T waves in the anterior precordial leads is the most frequent ECG sign in PE patients and the best index of massive PE, being associated with an angiographic Miller index >50% and a mean pulmonary arterial pressure >30 mm Hg. Other ECG signs are reported with variable frequencies, often strikingly different from those reported in other papers,24 eg, sinus tachycardia is rated

متن کاملPulmonary Embolism with Abdominal Pain and ST Elevation: A Case Report
Pulmonary embolism is considered as a great masquerader due to its frequent nonspecific signs and symptoms. Typically pulmonary embolism is under-diagnosed or over-diagnosed. In this study a patient with pulmonary embolism is reported in which the patient exhibited two unusual manifestations namely; right upper quadrant abdominal pain and ST-T elevation in anterior precordial leads. Due to the ...
متن کاملElectrocardiographic findings in pulmonary embolism.
Pulmonary embolism (PE) poses a challenge to physicians, as it can be difficult to diagnose but results in significant mortality and morbidity in patients. Diagnosing PE requires an integrated approach using clinical findings, electrocardiography (ECG), blood investigations and imaging modalities. Abnormalities in ECG are common among patients with massive acute PE and can serve as a prognostic...
متن کاملDifferential diagnostic dilemma between pulmonary embolism and acute coronary syndrome
Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is a frequent life-threatening condition in emergency departments. Careful diagnosis is important, and different diagnostic tests such as electrocardiogram (ECG), biochemical markers, echocardiogram, and computed tomography are required. Although ECG is a cheap and rapid diagnostic test for pulmonary embolism, it has some limitations in the differential diagnosis o...
متن کاملPeriodontal Pockets as a Potential Source of Infection: a Case of Possible Odontogenic Septic Pulmonary Embolism
Although dental foci can be sources of bacteremia and bacterial endocarditis, hematogenous spread of infection presented with septic pulmonary embolism apparently is rare. The occurrence of septic pulmonary embolism in patients with periodontal disease without suppurative thrombophlebitis of the great vessels of the neck is well documented but to our knowledge, there is no report on septic pulm...
