N ov 1 99 8 Phase transition in the passive scalar advection

چکیده
The paper studies the behavior of the trajectories of fluid particles in a compressible generalization of the Kraichnan ensemble of turbulent velocities. We show that, depending on the degree of compressibility, the trajectories either explosively separate or implosively collapse. The two behaviors are shown to result in drastically different statistical properties of scalar quantities passively advected by the flow. At weak compressibility, the explosive separation of trajectories induces a familiar direct cascade of the energy of a scalar tracer with a shortdistance intermittency and dissipative anomaly. At strong compressibility, the implosive collapse of trajectories leads to an inverse cascade of the tracer energy with suppressed intermittency and with the energy evacuated by large scale friction. A scalar density whose advection preserves mass exhibits in the two regimes opposite cascades of the total mass squared. We expect that the explosive separation and collapse of Lagrangian trajectories occur also in more realistic high Reynolds number velocity ensembles and that the two phenomena play a crucial role in fully developed turbulence. N ov 1 99 7 Multiscaling in passive scalar advection as stochastic shape dynamics
The Kraichnan rapid advection model is recast as the stochastic dynamics of tracer trajectories. This framework replaces the random fields with a small set of stochastic ordinary differential equations. Multiscaling of correlation functions arises naturally as a consequence of the geometry described by the evolution of N trajectories. Scaling exponents and scaling structures are interpreted as ...
متن کاملChaotic mixing in a torus map.
The advection and diffusion of a passive scalar is investigated for a map of the 2-torus. The map is chaotic, and the limit of almost-uniform stretching is considered. This allows an analytic understanding of the transition from a phase of constant scalar variance (for short times) to exponential decay (for long times). This transition is embodied in a short superexponential phase of decay. The...

متن کاملLocal and nonlocal advection of a passive scalar
Passive and active scalar mixing is examined in a simple one-parameter family of two-dimensional flows based on quasi-geostrophic dynamics, in which the active scalar, the quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity, is confined to a single horizontal surface so-called surface quasi-geostrophic dynamics and in which a passive scalar field is also advected by the horizontal, two-dimensional velocity f...

We study the motion of a spin 1 2 particle in a scalar as well as a magnetic field within the framework of supersymmetric quantum mechanics(SUSYQM). We also introduce the concept of shape invariant scalar and magnetic fields and it is shown that the problem admits exact analytical solutions when such fields are considered.
