Minimum Description Length and Compositionality
نویسنده
چکیده
In [12] we have shown that the standard de nition of compositionality is formally vacuous; that is, any semantics can be easily encoded as a compositional semantics. We have also shown that when compositional semantics is required to be "systematic", it is possible to introduce a non-vacuous concept of compositionality. However, a technical de nition of systematicity was not given in that paper; only examples of systematic and non-systematic semantics were presented. As a result, although our paper claried the concept of compositionality, it did not solve the problem of the systematic assignment of meanings. In other words, we have shown that the concept of compositionality is vacuous, but we have not replaced it with a better de nition; a de nition that would both be mathematically correct and would satisfy the common intuitions that there are parts of grammars which seem to have compositional semantics, and others, like idioms, that do not. We present such a non-vacuous de nition of compositionality in this chapter. Compositionality has been de ned as the property that the meaning of a whole is a function of the meaning of its parts (cf. e.g. [6], pp.24-25). A slightly less general de nition, e.g. [8], postulates the existence of a homomorphism from syntax to se-

Inferring Reduced Ordered Decision Graphs of Minimum Description Length
We propose an heuristic algorithm that induces decision graphs from training sets using Rissanen's minimum description length principle to control the tradeoo between accuracy in the training set and complexity of the hypothesis description.
متن کاملA tutorial introduction to the minimum description length principle
This tutorial provides an overview of and introduction to Rissanen’s Minimum Description Length (MDL) Principle. The first chapter provides a conceptual, entirely non-technical introduction to the subject. It serves as a basis for the technical introduction given in the second chapter, in which all the ideas of the first chapter are made mathematically precise. This tutorial will appear as the ...
متن کاملAdd Cartesian Differential Invariants to Minimum Description Length Shape Models
The minimum description length approach can automatic solve the point correspondence problem and give the better statistical shape models than those built by hand or equally spaced way. The current mdl approaches build the models only based on the segmented shapes without considering the local image structure and may place the markers at wrong places. This paper adds Cartesian differential inva...
متن کاملIntroduction to Minimum Encoding Inference
This paper examines the minimumencoding approaches to inference, Minimum Message Length (MML) and Minimum Description Length (MDL). This paper was written with the objective of providing an introduction to this area for statisticians. We describe coding techniques for data, and examine how these techniques can be applied to perform inference and model selection.
